Sunday in the Costa

The sun is shining here at Fieldbase, in fact the ground is looking positively dry for the first time in months. This morning we are trawling the internet looking for news from the outside world for Radio Raleigh this afternoon. As it stands the Alpha groups may be in for a bit of a long one as Helena and I try to outdo each other with hollywood gossip and other interesting news stories - so far Brad and Angelina are leading our top stories (sad but true)

We heard from all 7 groups this morning with some excellent radio coms and news that everyone is healthy and happy.

Alpha 6 on the beach had the most interesting Sitrep when they told us about their Survivor style plank challenge – the challenge was to stand on a 6 inch tilted plank for as long as possible. The plank off began at 9pm with Kyran, Will, Dirk, Bart and James. By 11.30pm Kyran had seen the light and bailed out, Will continued until 2am, while James and the Dutchies stayed on the plank until 5am!!!

The other great news is that the Macho trekkers did indeed get the view that we were hoping for. They reported clear skies and magical views from the top of the Dragon. They certainly deserved it. Today they trek on and are heading to the delightful community of Alto Reflis. There are lots of hills in this section, but the views are spectacular,

Alpha 3 are on their way up to the pylons as I write this. Having sorted out their food drop on Friday, their bags were particularly heavy yesterday and as Fran said the day was not flat as promised by Ross!

Alpha 4 have returned from the beach and are today getting back into some jungle action. Vee is on camp duty and is working on some creative recipes to keep the troops happy. Rain is threatening, so fingers crossed the basha beds are waterproof!

Alpha 9 have returned from Panama where they were supposed to pick up the materials for the roof. Unfortunately delays on the supply side meant that they returned empty handed, but as always in good spirits after their mini adventure. Today they will play in the local football competition and the materials will arrive tomorrow, just in time for them to finish the building.

Alpha 5 had a great day yesterday, celebrating James’ birthday after a hard days work. Today they will call in from the beach, so we are expecting them to be even jollier than usual.

And finally Alpha 1 had a tough day yesterday, a guided section through some serious uphill jungle. They wild camped last night down by the river and this morning have climbed out of the valley to the look out point where they will see what is ahead of them in the next few days.

Here at fieldbase we are preparing for the final washup including the highly anticipated Golden Mess Tin Awards. We are also happy to report that our pig which has been well fed on our leftovers, is looking bigger by the day, and indeed tastier!

That’s it from me, Lizzy and Szeman are back today and Amy and Jackster tomorrow so we should have some photos for you. Until then stay safe and have a fantastic Sunday evening.

Anna

Hi Bliss

SO you did the Dragon- wow! Just read that there are lots of hills today- keep going darling. I know this is the biggest challenge for you but YOU CAN DO IT! Hope the feet aren't too sore! We are all so proud of you and you are going to have some great stories to tell.

We took Amber iceskating today- good fun! Cooking Sunday roast at the moment- not long before I'll be cooking one for you- and I can't wait! Amber is well- broke for the Easter hols, so no school run for me tomorrow- going to the Science museum tomorrow we think- Amber's choice not mine!Dad is fine as is everyone else. Clocks went back last night ,so lovely light evenings on their way- lots of BBQ's in the garden and pub meals at the Anchor - looking forward to you being there for them.

I have sent a couple of messages but they haven't appeared on the blog, but hope you got them anyway. Hope the parcel arrived with the letter- and that you have enjoyed the goodies we sent. Most of it was chosen by Amber so I hope it was what you liked. Don't want you being too skinny when you return. Don't worry I'll be feeding you up-lol!! Read that alpha 2 were the only trek group to still have all it's members- so pleased that you are hanging in there Bliss.

Counting the days ,
Love you lots ,miss you loads

Hi Kyran
I was going to say I can't believe you were the first to give up on the plank challenge but as I know you are the worlds greatest fidget - I can't believe you managed to stay still and concentrate for 2 whole hours. Well done we are very proud. I also see you have been up to other challenges such as sleeping alone on the beach. I hope you remembered all the things you learnt from your Z..... Survial pack!!! You never know!!!! Saw Jacks mum at Dafodil Day today. She was asking after you and I said you would no doubt be round there as soon as you get back. Glad you are managing to keep yourselves entertained and will look forward to hearing about the next challenge.

Love you lots mum xxxxxxxxxx

hi machotrekker Dominique, again we had an update. You have reached the summit and with the rewarding spectacular views!!!
To all crew of the field base, thanks for all the caring of our trekkers and for the great blogs you send.
After sending the previous blog,I stepped out of the frontdoor to get my morning newspaper.I almost tripped because the steps were completely covered with snow. Then I went inside empty handed, the newspaper disappeared under the snow(30 cm).Papa then started a bit of shoveling and found the paper.Cars are having difficulties getting up on Val Gardena Blvd.,snowtires and 4x4 is very valuable in spring.
Fieldbase promised pictures soon!!!Can't wait to see them.Miss you, mama

To Bliss Godden

The trek sounds amazing although quite tough by the sounds of the days of hills you have to walk over. I hope you keep going as i am sure you will, i told you that you were pretty tough as well as beautiful.

By the way I finished series 4 of 24, amazing and am now on disc 2 of series 5. So hopefully we will watch seris 6 when you get back. The football boys from home took me out on friday night for a late birthday celebration. We played some poker and then went to guildford to harpers, was an eventful night and i'll fill you in when ou get back. I hope you recieved my parcel with the sweets and magazines as well as the letter.

I sent your mum some flowers and a card from you and me for mothers day because i thought it would be something you would have wanted me to do.

I really can't wait for you to get home, seems like you have been away for ages, which i suppose you have been. I really miss you and hope that you are having an amazing experience and can't wait for you to tell me all about it.

As for the trek, keep going, dig deep and ignore any blissters and the aching feet, i promise i will not let you do any walking when you get back, i'll carry you instead.

Missing you but see you soon
Lots of Love
Tom

Hi Tom - Alpha 9! Hear you have been to Panama and back emptyhanded - what a shame. Hope your supplies arrive in time. Have you been playing football in the tournament ? have you won??? The clocks went forward last night which means the beginning of long light evenings. We spent yesterday at Jamie's new place doing a few things. Katy had a drink with us all before we went to theatre and sent her love. we gave them an update on your travels in CR. Matt phoned this morning and confirmed that they have your arrival details. But you have NZ before that....... We have been busy at home and in the garden today - another trip to the dump! Anyhow take care and finish that roof! Love form us all Mum dad and Jamie and Mr M.xxxxxxxx

Geniet nog even. Hasta da vista!! Heb je de plankwedstrijd gewonnen? Pa

Hi, kirstin - alpha 9,
all the way to Panama and no wood! bet that tested your "calm".
last blog appears to have been censored or at least i can't see it.
no real news anyway; just keeping in touch.

Misdirections, back tracking, uphill jungle, wild camping? What a trial; taxis for Alpha 1...stat!

Poochykins, I am seriously in awe...how are your lil legs and feet holding up (not to mention your back)?

Apparently the clocks went forward today; neither Ste or I remembered, but luckily neither of us were working or had to go anywhere...a bit of a non-story and a complete waste of blog space then really eh??!

I gave Chinchy a really good spring clean this morning; he didn't appreciate it though, he's been stomping around his cage like a fluffy bad-ass since! Spent the rest of the day cooking for the freezer; doesn't really compare to your exciting weekend does it? I've suddenly come over all discontented and resentful grrrrr! hehehe.

Hey, had shopping delivery yesterday; there may be a tub of Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie Frozen Yogurt with your name on it hidden somewhere in the freezer? I'll disguise it as a packet of tofu to throw Ste off the scent.

I have been downloading season 7 of 24 for you; by the time you return home there should be 18 episodes for you to watch back to back. Ditto for the new series of Heroes too...that's a weeks worth of sofa/duvet vegging at least!

Love you Pooch x x x

HI Sarah (Alpha 4) glad to hear you've had time to visit a beach. Hope the rain has kept away and you are all enjoying the jungle. Your cards were perfectly timed and your father was really pleased to get it. He had a wonderful 60th (even though you and I weren't there!) Ann called in and Carole, Martine, Andre and Mark took him to Bel & the Dragon for lunch. Andrew's card arrived on his birthday and thanks for rememberign Mother's day. We've had a great time with Mark. He was relaxed and great fun. I can't wait to take you on some the walks he's found. We walked yesterday for an hour and a half. Spring is finally beginning and it was a beautiful day. He left yesterday evening and has just emailed to say he's in HongKong, half way home! Hope you are keeping well on this leg and coping with jungle bugs and other wildlife. I'm off to Las Vegas next Saturday, back on 8 April so hope we can talk when you get back to field camp. The blogs are great and I hope we will soon see pics too. Thinking of you lots. Much love Mum x

WW! EB! Getting slightly bored in Norfolk, even read a whole book in one sitting today... Should really be working though so better get started on some of that, essays to write and Arabic to learn. Really don't know how your trek is going but I suppose there isn't much they can really say, each day is probably fairly similar to the one before - lots of climbing, sweating, not washing, living in caves and generally reversing evolution. Hope you're enjoying it. I really can't wait for you to get back. I love you. X

Hi Hugs. Just the latest horse news. Lulie has gone to boarding school and being an absolute star. She walked straight into the box and travelled like a rock , never moving. A couple of days to settle down without her Mum, but is now lungeing perfectly with bit in mouth and roller on. Erin raced in the members race at the VWH and made 3 miles and 15 huge fences and was just moving into second place out of 11 when she fell over the third to last fence ! Emma,Lucinda Merina and I where sceaming the whole way round. Anyway both horse and rider fine. God !! Miss and love you Mummy

Just come back from a great weekend in Cork visiting Petra, Kathleen & Miriam. They're all well. Kathleen's baby is gorgeous -hard to believe he's 4 months already! Laika was SO excited to see Tucker on Friday (and vice versa). Was so nice to see them re-united! Lol!

Starting into a busy fortnight now cos am on-call next weekend. Loads of cows calving at the moment so hope there aren't too many middle-of-the-night calls!

Can't wait to see you soon and I know I speak for all of us - thought about making DL an 'advent' calendar to count down the last days!! ... but can't honestly be bothered! LOL.

Love you lots!!!

Hi Seanie (coast to coast trek)
That poor back, and those poor feet of yours!! Anyway, in a small way we were with you over the weekend: the annual Lady Bay goes yomping in the back of beyond weekend! We were 23 I think, with David, Pest and Jamie being the only 'lads'. It was the usual format including the ritual table tennis tournament, and it was great fun; loads of people asking after you.

Now a bit of business - and I'm going to e-mail you as well - we received a form today, Monday 30th March, for you to sign and return by 24th April (!!!)regarding the assignment; really don't know why we didn't get it before, but there you go. I'll post it - and keep fingers crossed (tall order)I'll speak to her Tuesday and see if they will accept authorisation via e-mail as well.

I'm sure you will have had Jim's e-mail about the package (sent by you 18th and received by Pest 23rd March - AMAZING), but if not, it was awesome in thought and content. I told so many people about Pest's present. He says he's going to e-mail you - he better!!

Following up on the request for the Belize address; will send it very soon, I'm sure.

Keep up your spirits, health, immunity, malaria pills, water etc nag, nag!!!!! - you've got to expect it, hon.
