Road Trip to Alpha 1, 4, 6 & 9

Julian and Szeman have not long returned from their road trip around south and central Costa Rica. Unfortunately they experienced some technical difficulties and could not digitally record anything (they didn't have a camera).

Anyway, don't worry, we have drafted in a local artist. He has created the wondeful impressions below based on Julian and Szeman's tales. Enjoy!

Here is 'Action Man' Stu conquering another Corcovado mountain. His bag is awfully heavy in this picture as they've just had a food drop.
Next on the trip came Alpha 9. Here they are in a group shot. 8 out of 9 happy venturers isn't bad. Up the road to Alpha 6 and Playa El Rey - this is William Jaffray riding an Olive Ridley turtle just like a donkey up to the Ranger Station. Finally, here is Project Manager Sarah Bickerstaffe having a snooze on her hammock after a hard morning digging at La Cangreja (Alpha 4) Hopefully we'll have a few more impressions up soon, but don't get your hopes up - this particular artist only works on one day of the year. Hasta Luego!

Hi, Tom W with bad ankle at FB. Hope you're enjoying time with the FB team, as their tea slave or other useful function... So sorry you can't complete the trek after so many months of anticipation. It was good to hear that you sound OK despite it all.
I'm packing for a quick trip to Belfast; Dad's at a jazz concert at the Sage and Josie has been booking tickets for a concert at the O2 Academy (new name!) next week.
Looking forward to seeing you soon. Anna's warning that you may need time and space noted (thanks, Anna) and special supplies of food ordered.
Nine days 'til we see you. Eight days til you leave. I know you'll all find the leaving hard.
Hope you get out on some food drops, meet up with Alpha 3 and see some more of CR before all the groups return.
Go, Alpha 3 - do it for Tiny Tom!!!
Love Mum, Dad and Josie xxxxxxxxx

To Charlotte in Alpha 4 - looking forward to hearing from you next week - hope all those trenches got dug! Do think about what Jessie can bring out for you - I'm going to see her on Fri 10th April so can drop off anything then. Really sorry you're not coming home for a quick turnaround but maybe it would all be too emotional and think of those polluting airmiles. We'll be away in Lech until very late on Wed 8th April so don't try and call us til Thurs. Hope the rain held off - lots of love from all of us, Mum xxxxxxxxxxx

To Grace Francombe, Alpha 9
Hi Grace, this is mum. Just a short message to let you know how excited we are that you will soon be home. Hope the last phase is going well and that the sad face on the drawing of Alpha 9 is not you! We read about your trip to Panama! Hope you have a good few days back at field base and good luck with the white water rafting
We are beginning to prepare for Easter here and I will soon be shopping for all the food etc. Joe has been home but is back in Coventry at the moment. He will be back again next Monday.
Nanny and Grandad are arriving on Thursday and Jess will be home then, as well. Grant is off to France this weekend. We will be looking forward to coming to meet you on Saturday.
No new car as yet, so we will probably be squashed into mine.
We've seen both Helen and Charlotte this week and they can't wait to see you to compare Raleigh experiences. Lots of other people in the village asking about you as well.
Can't wait to see you and hear all of your news.
Miss you and love you lots
See you next week
Love Mum (and Dad and all)

Hey Seanie!
So, not much time left now in Raleigh. You must have had tears and euphoria along the way. Seems strange looking at all these e-mails about The Return, and yours will be in August! I guess you're excited and a little apprehensive, but heck, life's for big adventures and explorations, and the next stage is just going to be awesome as well. No news on the Belize connection; I'm going to have to write snail mail, and I'll e-mail it to you.
Pest is breaking up for Easter today, and it's going to have to get it's head down for revision - it's as stressful for us as well, bless him!!
Sally's coming up for Easter. Don't worry she won't sleep in your room; she'll be right upstairs.
About to book next year's Lady Bay goes Yomping trip, probably in Northumberland, so if you go to Newcastle, you could always join us - yeh!!!
Well, can't say I'm looking forward to seeing you next week; more like in August.
Malaria pills - sorry, the nagging's compulsive, you know that! Keep safe.
E-mail us when you can.
Love you heaps and heaps

herrow steph alpha 4, is zo zo. got back from history trip yesterday - it was the most amazing trip ever!! loads of banter (teachers included - omg new found love for mr elwood haha). met SNCC leader John Lewis - you would have loved to listen to him, the things he had to say about MLK and Obama were facinating. highlight was seeing Obama drive past our hotel, loads of police cars and HUGE black Chevvy's (his decoy's I presume) but it wasnt difficult to work out which one he was in (the most surrounded one!)
wierd to think you were only in the next continent.
evie's is next week and im hoping its ok with you, not that you could do anything to stop me but can I use your ID love you loads and loads!!!! laterz xxxxxxxx

Hello Calum (with the intrepid Alpha 1) Well would you believe it, I'm off AGAIN to Kingston to look after Charlotte. It's great to be in such demand up there, as it means I can keep an eye on your Mum,Dad and Rory while staying round the corner with Uncle Steve. I can tell you, they all have their noses to the grindstone.....except for the usual round of visitors, parties etc. The Crawford family are
their next arrivals - coinciding with my Mary Poppins duties. I understand a big barbecue is planned for us all on Tuesday (weather permitting) - you will be very much missed, of course, and a good excuse to raise a few glasses(of Ribena, you understand)!
It feels a long time since we said good-bye to you on your Big Adventure and here you are now a seasoned Venturer, nearly at the finish line.
Congratulations to you all......now you have only to tell us all about it!
I know you are off on more travels for a few weeks,Calum, so have emailed you some Easter Eggs....well, they will have to do till you get home - your real one is waiting for you there.
(you need some sound for the email).

Emjoy every minute of the rest of your travels and take good care of yourself. See you before too long. Love and big hugs, Gr.Mavis X

To Cate Alpha 1,
Nederland is even in zomer. Dag schat, nog even volhouden. Love you, xxxxx Mam

Anonymous said...

Woo hoo Wendy,

Hurry home.

See you soon

Hi Steph - Alpha 4
We've just seen the lovely pictures on the blog from la Congreja. Looks like you're all working really hard through the rain. You look very tanned! Great picture of you all on the beach. We have been to Sicily for a few days. Very warm there. Lots of ancient archeological sites and the magnificent Mount Etna too. On the way back, the Ryanair plane "went technical" as Kevin says. We had to hang about at Palermo airport for 10 hours. Got to talk to a lot of the other passengers. Zoe had a fantastic time on her trip. She hasn't edited her photos yet so we're still waiting to see them! Joe is coming back from La Plagne today hopefully with all limbs intact. Matt is staying at Uni for the hols to study for his finals. He will be back over the easter weekend. We had a lovely dinner with Chris and Ana, Alan and Shaunna last night. Guess what. Livvy and Marcus are having a "trial separation" lol. Liv is back spending time seeing all her friends and having fun. Alan wants Nicky to get a job in France in the summer as she is taking French classes as a sideline at Loughborough. Zoe is looking forward to Evie's party. Tomorrow we are going for a hike at Leith Hill with C & R, and R & T + the cousins - C has organised it, hope its not too arduous! St Dunstan's has been flattened completely now, waiting for some new building to be slapped on the site. Digit had a nice hol at Mary's but came back a bit smelly as usual! Woof woof!!! Really looking forward to hearing from you. Can't wait. We're going to email you some new info about your week in Samara - have posted some stuff to you at the Toruma hostel and to the language school too. Hope you get it. Hasta luego. Love you and miss you lots. Big hugs. M, D, M, Z, J, D xxxx 1x4L
