Final Alpha Groups...

The Alphas have now deployed for their final phase and here are the groups...

Alpha Yankee 1- Corcovado Trek, Costa Rica
Starting in the stunning montane La Amistad National Park, the largest national park in Costa Rica and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the trek gets the chance to walk through beautiful mountain scenery and towering cloud forest. After passing by waterfalls and hot springs the group will cross the Coto Brus valley to the Fila Costena – a chain of mountains that run parallel to the sea. Once they are out of the mountains the group will finish the trek by crossing the famous Corcovado National Park that straddles the Osa Peninsula, walking through the best preserved tropical rainforest in Central America. The group will have a chance to see monkeys and Tapirs before the walk along the beaches of the Pacific Ocean for three days at the end.
Amy Wilson (PM), Asia Heczko (PM), Mel Richards (PM), Adam Chalkley, Alex Backhouse, Amy Ratcliff, Anabella Karelia, Chloe Webster, Hannah Tonneman, Joanne S Blackwood, Lesbia Vásquez, Sander ten Haven, Sid Hegde, Tom Fear, Tim F Niehe

Alpha Yankee 2- Guanacaste Trek, Costa Rica
The setting for this trek covers a huge variety of different ecosystems from cloud forest above 3000 metres down to one of the last remaining stands of primary dry tropical forest left in the Americas. The group will start close to the Arenal volcano and see its lava run down the sides at night before circumnavigating Volcan Tenorio via the Caribbean slopes visiting Turquoise waterfalls and moist rainforest. After passing by Volcan Miravalles the group will head to Rincon de la Vieja national park to climb one of the volcanoes and to witness steaming mud pots, geysers, and hot sulphur springs. After several days of walking through the forest they'll arrive at the foot of Cerro Cacao in Guanacaste National park where they'll steady themselves for a climb up the volcano. The trek will finish at Playa Junquillal to relax by the beautiful calm waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Chris Blessley (PM), Emma Fellows (PM), Carol María Fernández Herrera, Charlie Hockless, Dunia González Calero, Edward Smart, Helena G Parker, Ian B ter Haar Josseling Zeledón Bravo, Louise J Simpson, Megan L Illingworth, Robert J Coates, Roseanna  Webb, Teri Daly,

Alpha Yankee 3- Volcan Turrialba and Braulio Carillo National Park, Costa Rica
Volcan Turrialba is a 3,328 metre volcano that towers over Raleigh Fieldbase. Although currently active, although only one of its three craters releases gas and smoke emissions. Raleigh’s work here is part of a programme to develop visitor facilities in the park in order to increase income and conservation opportunities in the area. The group will also be working in Braulio Carillo National park - a stunning area of primary rainforest situated in the heart of the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica. It abounds with animals, birds, insects and plants. The reserve acts as a biological corridor between many neighbouring protected areas. The plans for this reserve including building trails in the forest that will be used by tourists and school groups to learn more about this impressive area and the wildlife it contains.

Roberto Rodriguez (PM), Gerry Kiernan (PM), Jose Mario Mondragon, Caroline L Murray, Clemmie Anderson, Emma Stiling,  Freya Lemon, Gemma Hall, Hazel Foley, James Donger, Richard Cronheim, Rolando Talavera Perez, Sylvie Myers,

Alpha Yankee 4- La Rampla, Miraflor, Nicaragua
Miraflor is a beautiful reserve in the north of Nicaragua protecting a 206sqkm area of a variety of eco-system. The reserve is somewhat unique for Nicaragua in that it is made up of a number of small farms and was created upon the request of the local people. It has patches of primary forest intermingled with successional growth, savannah and pastures. This project is for one phase only working to develop the trails belonging to a cooperative of farmers called the Cooperativa El Triunfo in forest near to the community of La Rampla.

Christina M’Baye (PM), Phil Wood (PM), Sabrina Napthine (PM), Stijn C Teves, Andrés Cambronero Rodríguez, Jennifer K McGowan, Hannah Leach, Harm J van der Wal, Eliana Maria León Vargas, Daan v Apeldoorn, Catherine Ewins, Alice L Wadsworth, Alette Jansen

Alpha Yankee 5- San Marquena, (Achuapa), Nicaragua
Close to the town of Achuapa, in one of the poorest most remote areas of Nicaragua, Raleigh is working on a gravity-feed water project to bring clean and safe drinking water to families in the community of San Marquena. The group will continue to work with the locals to dam small streams, build tanks to collect the water from where it can run through pipes to all the local houses.

This project is extremely important for the reserve as it will equip future generations with the skills they need for the challenges of globalisation and change in the 21st century. The Raleigh volunteers will be learning about the culture of these indigenous people while working alongside them.
Wellard (Sarah Ellard) (PM), Ben Cahill (PM), Antonio Jimenez-Alvardo (PM), Fabienne Ouwehand, Andrew P Brown, Anita Boyd, Camilla O'Connell, Christian Hibberd, Duaa Al-uzairy, Holly E Edwards, Kat Drake, Lucía Salazar Sánchez, Martha E Gray, Max Chalong, Sabina Bridge, Sarah Ward

Roo - good to see you made it back to base, safe and sound. for info the transfer of money to Raleigh has been made. Went the World Cup yesterday - Gee gees not footie. Excellent event everyone dressed up to the nines and beyond - some pretty weird and wonderful creations although not everyone carried them off as you will imagine. Off to London his afternoon for a longish two week stint leaving Mm on her own - then back with Barnaby. Not long until we see you either - can't wait.

To Harm van der Wal, Alpha Yankee 4
    Lieve Harm,

Hi Jenn, Great to get your email, don't know if you got our reply? I am sitting here at the computer sipping my fair trade Nicaraguan coffee (Mum won't buy any other apart from Costa Rican, of course). The white water rafting sounds amazing! I am very jealous. Good to see your photo on the blog (and thanks for standing closer to the camera with the bright blue shirt!) Not entirely sure what you are doing on your current phase, but no doubt we will see photos soon. Think Miraflor was where Louise was for her first phase. Looking forward to seeing the pictures you have taken. We were very impressed with the picture of a Sloth that one of the other groups posted. Not sure if your forested area also has lots of wildlife? Spring is definitely here now - the clocks went forward last night, so lighter evenings, but will have to get up earlier tomorrow.
    Lots of Love Dad

Hey girl! I thought I would leave you a quick little message update on the weekends events. Sadly Cambridge lost the boat race yesterday - such a traumatic day and had lots of very very miserable boys to deal with last night. They took 'drowning your sorrows' to a whole new level. Got home at 7am when the sun was up and there were boats going out on the river for a morning outing - it was a disaaaaster!

Good luck for the rest of your stage and can't wait to see you in 3 weeks!

    Miss you lots. Bush xxxxxx

Hello there, stop changing groups your confusing me i just had to text your mum and see if she knew the group you were in but luckily the blog uploaded the groups page, so now i can hound you with messages for the next three weeks. Then your home bound, cannot wait your missed a lot. Had today off, its gone so quickly, probably didn't help i slept in until silly o'clock. The clocks went forward an hour and i went out last night, messed with my body clock you see. If only you were here then a sleep in would have definitely been off the cards haha. Just went out into tavy last night and you'll be pleased to know you did not miss anything, worked until half 10, but met daymo and that out then went to the dulf, old times brought back. Im also sad to announce I had to pay three pounds to enter chams, how very tragic, but it was so quite out i had to go there really. Please do not get down about missing out on nights out because it hasn't really got much better then that ha. The weathers lush back here was hot all day today, even got the shorts out and had a bbq down cleaves, so my day has been good in the end, also got roped into playing indoor cricket, weird game and much prefer the real thing. Back to reality tomorrow tho, really not looking forward to work, but got thursday and friday off so not all bad and il ask about coming to pick you up this week, all will be sorted, only two weeks next monday, finally the time has nearly come :). Plus i get paid then as well, so we shall finally be sorted for our holiday. Your little conversation about your money made me laugh a lot when you got off the phone to me ha. These euro's are just starring at me. The project your on sounds good and know you'll be having fun, maybe not as exciting as the one you did before, but i know you can do it even with your ankle, so keep at it and stay positive. Love you lots and speak in the next few days xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hello!

Its been such a dry and sunny March and the spring flowers have been fantastic. Will came home last night and we are due to try your car today. Note I said your car! Lieve Alette,

    He dappere Dodo,

    goede doel zo steunt.

Hou je taai, hou van je

    Hi Bazzy
    How ya doin?
It's Tues 29th Mar and I've just made a batch of Welsh cakes up and guess who I'm sharing one with??
No change there! Tula's had a great walk and some gardening time again today (read following the chickens all over the place- I allowed them some free ranging to help with the weeding).
The weather is still quite mild and warm for March even if we haven't had a lot of sun today.
Sunroof's open in the mini and dad's been posing with no roof on his car.
Dad has also been wheeling in barrow loads of topsoil from the field and is complaining cos he's out of practice. He's really missing having a boy about. Tes and I just revolt.

Plumber has completely gutted the bathroom and we have deliveries scheduled for the next 3 days. Guess which tile we chose in the end???
The very first one we ever brought back from that shop in Bristol. Typical!

The BBQ with George went off really well and Dad behaved and left his clipboard in the office.
    We had steaks. Delicious!
Met his dad when he came to collect and it was nothing like Meet the Fockers I'm relieved to say. Don't know what he thought of us mind you!
Dad christened the brazier and we had tea lights and candles outside on Mar 25th and probably the earliest, darkest BBQ ever. Good fun!

Joe spent the evening trying out all the A&E dpts in Manchester last night, escorting Pete, who took a ball in the face in hockey training and needed a tooth repositioning and getting his face checked up. Pete's ok but gonna miss the Christie Cup on Wed, and Joe didn't get in a taxi to go home til about midnight.

Tesni flies out next Wed to NY and Washington but has a history mock first. Feet on the ground!
Grandad loved his birthday card and yours was the only one that arrived on the day. Mine was early, Tes' was late and Joe didn't send one but rang up instead on the day. So you were a hero for being so far away and still being organised. Well done!

Was great to catch up with you last week and I've seen your AY5 group on the blog. Sounds like yet another fantastic new experience where you'll get to make such a difference to a community.
    Can't wait for an update.

Hope the Spanish is coming along and I liked your haircut btw. Very George Clooney!
Lots and Lots of love from us all. Big M xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope the two day bus journey wasn't too bad, bet everyone had a bit of cabin fever by the time you got there ;-) A couple of days rest on your ankle must have been good though baby, hope your ankle's improved loads and tummy is feeling better now. Sending lots of get well vibes via our love beam :-)

Well, we got hoodwinked into thinking spring had sprung and summer was here, it's tiddling down with rain today - typical eh! One weekend of nice weather and we're lulled into a false sense of security ;-)

Had a really chilled weekend, met up with Karen I used to work with for lunch on Saturday, she can't wait to meet you :-) Had a really lovely afternoon then spent all of Sunday studying, once I get into it I really enjoy it, just reeling a bit on how much I've got to do - keeping a cool calm collected head about it though and am just doing rather than stressing :-)
Ohhhh guess what I'm wearing baby....go on guess......my new walking boots yayyyyeeeee ;-) They arrived today whooop whooop!! Bless, my dad phoned last night to see if I had them yet - he went walking in Germany with some of the guys from work and by the sounds of it most of the guys really messed their feet up, so my dad's in super dad mode of "break them boot in"! It's not this weekend but next weekend we're going up the Malvern Hills, should be really sweet, dad and me are heading off on the bike first thing Saturday morning and mum's driving up a bit later on and we're staying at their friends house and all having dinner on Saturday night, will be lovely as haven't seen them for aaggeeess, so baby if you're ears are burning on the 9th April you'll know why - I'll be talking about you flat out as Jan and Neil will want to hear everything :-)

Part uno of dos baby, my first message was too long - second part coming now :-) I love you baby xx

For Phil 'Gorgeous' Wood - Alpha Yankee 4

    Here's part dos baby :-)

Sooooo we're onto 110 sleeps now baby, how ace is that - very very very nearly into double figures, then when we reach 87 we're half way through - although bizarrely 99 sleeps seems like a bigger milestone in my head than 87, was disappointed when I realised 87 is only half way through - seems like it's more than that, if that makes sense - please tell me it makes sense and I'm not just whittering on like a fool ;-)

The Beast is booked in to get the battery all sorted out on Thursday so she'll be purring like a kitten again, heading up to Kit's on Saturday, can't wait :-) Ahhh her back's been playing her up so am taking my reflexology chair with me and am going do a treatment so hopefully that will help make it more comfortable. Have got my Mowtown hits ready for a massive sing-a-long with Jane in the car :-) Then back to studying again this Sunday.

Ahhhh Zo's cat Libby has also had kittens now, 4 ickle super fluffy ones - so sweet, have already told Kit I may accidentally pick one up and smuggle it out in my handbag ;-) Ohhhh baby have you got me a monkey yet?? Just a little one please - it can play with the kitten :-)

Sounds like it's going to be really tough work developing the trails in Miralor, you'll be like He-Man after all of this baby! Still can't believe this is your last project!?! Each part of it feels like it's been really long but looking back now it seems to have gone so fast! Am trying to keep my head busy so I'm not counting the days/hours/minutes till you're back at base camp ;-) Still do it though, maybe not hours and minutes - not until the last could of days anyway ;-) Can't wait to see your srumptious face again baby.

Right I'd best get back to it, I love you sooo sooo much baby, am missing you like crazy, more and more every day.

Take care of you and have an amazing time with the families and the village baby, say hi from me please :-)

Love you eternally, forever yours, your loving fiancée xxxxxxxxxx

    Hi Tom
Hope the trek is going well. WE've been thinking about you and hope that you're still enjoying your time out there.
We're fine. been having some fantastic weather in Cornwall but today the weather broke....and the new yurt arrived....so we had several hours in the pouring rain erecting it....what fun! Anyway its up and that's all that matters.
so tomorrow we're rewarding ourselves with a well earned day off....and going to get Adelle in the morning so we're looking forward to that.
We called Dial a Flight to change your ticket....and have now had LOTS of conversations with them but they are adamant that the ticket in non-transferable. So I think its going to have to be a whole new ticket. So we'll do our best to sort it for you in the next couple of days and book it for around the 23rd May.....I'll keep you posted.
Enjoy the rest of your stay.
    Lots lOve Mum

Just a quickie to follow up on the STA insurance. It's all good. Their mistake in reimbursing you twice, so you can rest assured it's active and now dated until 17th July, as that's the date you land.
Also, your bank balance has gone up by £245 (YEAH!) as final pay from The George came in. Well done you!
Keep damming the dams, digging the trenches, eating the bean paste and getting that water flowing Baz. You are amazing!

    Hi Alice
Thanks for your email - very exciting to get that !
It was great to see your happy smiling face in the last photo on the blog. You really look like you're having a great time .
So after the trek , it's developing trails in Miraflor .
Bet you don't want to come home !
So , what have we been doing apart from missing you ( which we do so very much ! ) .
Last week we were in Burwash and the weather was beautiful - like summer had arrived early.Mum did loads of gardening , and I did some good walks down near Rye ( not 250km mind ).
We spent a couple of evenings waiting out to see badgers down near the stables - but no show .
Mum had a bonfire , which as you know , she loves .
I also did a couple of days commuting on the train up to London , which was an adventure( I am easily pleased ).
Back in London this week , and Sue has gone for a couple of days to Auntie Mary's to help with her garden. I went to see your mate , Patrick wolf last night at koko with Keith , whose label he's signed to .
He was great - but then you told me that 3 years ago ... I get the feeling he might have a break through this time round .
I finished writing the big report i have been working on for months - 20,000 words or so - you will have to read it when you get back , and 'peer review' it .
Any way life here isn't quite as amazing as i am sure it is there...can't wait to see you when you get back and hear the stories ,
    Take care
    Lots of love ,
    Dad xx

Hey there my gorgeous fiance :-)

How are you doing gorgeous? Am thinking of you all the time and wondering what you can see and where you are, I can't wait to hear all about it and see your photos, I'm so proud of you baby.

Ohhhh it's been a long week baby, I made the mistake of tempting fate the other day, was at Gill and Paul's doing their consultation forms so I can treat them and was saying about how hectic everything's been and said ohhh I can't belive I haven't been ill I must've missed it, then that night my throat starting feeling scratchy and it's been really sore and red on the one side since :-( ggrrrrrrr!

So it's Friday night and am feeling a bit bleugh and am missing you so so much, made some dinner and thought I need something to cheer me up, had a look through my films and thought American Gangster, then thought too ohh far too heavy then thought of THE best film in the world, ever made, like eevvveerrr Elf!! So am sat here giggling away, ahhh wishing we were sat snuggled in our blanket snug watching it together...."I love you I'll call you in 5 minutes" :-)

The Beast is back on the road and purring like a little tiger, giving her a proper run out tomorrow when Jane, Kate and me go to see Kit, can't wait, have got singing tunes lined up for the car and have got my reflexology chair to give Kit a treatment, ohhhh and we get the see the ickle kittens - ace :-) Ohhhh yes and don't forget the monkey baby ;-)

So I've been wearing my walking boots this week, get excited every time I put them on, 108 sleeps baby, almost into double figures, longing and aching for you baby.

Can't wait to see you and speak to you gorgeous, I miss you so so much, every day feels like an eternity, I love you more than words can ever say baby, my baby, my babbbbyyyyy ;-)

Forever and ever and ever yours,

Hi Alice, It was great to hear from you, I've been meaning to reply ever since but, being the great techy that I am, I couldn't work out how to blog you without Tony's help. Any way it was lovely to see your happy smiling face, and to hear that you are having a great time.
Tony and I have had a lovely few weeks in Burwash. I haven't got much further with the portrait, as the weather was so good that I couldn't resist the lure of the garden. We did also manage one game of tennis, which Tony would like you to know that he won.
I spent most of last week at auntie Mary's, as we were implementing my design for their garden, which involved a lot of digging and moving of soil. It was hard work, but the layout is now in place and is looking really good. I'd love to be there to help with all the planting, but there's so much work to do in our own gardens, and I've got the Artists Open House weekend coming up soon.
I had my hair cut last Friday, and it is quite short, but I really like it. I went to Mary's hairdresser in Bath, which does seem like quite a long way to go, but I think it was worth it. It's certainly the best cut I've had in years.
Tomorrow, Rachel and Jacqui are coming to stay for a long weekend, which should be nice, Rachel seems a lot better than she was, at least over the phone, so fingers crossed. I think Helen is going to join us in Burwash for a couple of days. William is still squatting at the pub, and has now turned Helen and Maurice's garden into a vegetable plot, as he wants to be self sufficient.
Tony and I are missing you loads, it's so boring having a tidy house all the time! Actually that's not strictly true, Tony is now noticing how untidy I can be. Can't wait to see you a week on Monday, and hear all about your adventures. Must go and do some food shopping now, as we have hardly any in the house and guests arriving tomorrow. Lots and lots of love Mum. xxx.

Bore da from sunny Wilts Baz.
The weather is full on spring with temperatures hitting "t-shirt" degrees.
Just come back from a hike up to Box Woods with the best dog in the world and I was trying out my new camera app, so look on FB when you're back in the Land of the Technology.

Put Tes on a coach at KES at 3.30am and she's on her way to your side of the Atlantic. She's sooo excited to go back to NY but is staying in a hostel, so she'll miss me a little bit. She's got a huge tour ahead of her in both NY and DC but should be brilliant time.

Joe's off to Spain for a hockey tour on Sat and then returns to do his interview with P&G on 14th and comes home here for a BBQ on 15th.
He was a real sweetie yesterday and sent me the biggest bunch of flowers from "both my sons" for Mother's Day, so thankyou!! xx

Dad's car had an argument with a kerb in a parking bay in the station car park and he needs a new wing and front bumper. It's a long expensive story that doesn't involve ice, but it'll be sorted soon.
Dad's ok and is supposed to be writing you a message on here but I can't see one. He's been v busy at work but is thinking of you all the time, as are we all. You weren't the noisiest person in the house but you cannot imagine how quiet this place is without you. Tes has no-one to laugh or chat with anymore, and we all miss you so much.
It'll be good when you get to meet up with D&A, cos they're putting up so much stuff on FB and we can't wait to hear from you.

Atbin's photos of the Salt Lakes in Bolivia are absolutely amazing. They're having a great time and will be full of stories to tell you when you all meet up. Think they involve clubbing!
Dan had his offer from Leeds (yeah!) Not heard anything about A's offers yet.

Izzy Fitzharris came back into school yesterday to see Mrs Cooper so Tes had a long chat with her all about Oxford- sounds like it's full of KES pupils. Tes said she saw Lukey Barnard too.

Grandma and Grandad are doing fine and send their love and ask daily if I've heard anything of your group. About time AY5 got some blog up!!

Chooks are laying so many eggs I'm having to give them away weekly (til Joey comes home)

Going to grass the top bank this weekend- oohhh exciting and am planting like fury into the banks behind the wall. the veg beds are weeded and I've got new pots in already and a shopping list for the garden centre where I'm going next.

Supper for two here this evening with a jumbone thrown in for Tu. It's going to be such a strange week but I may just put my feet up for an hour here and there.

I love you dearly Harry and am really looking forward to hearing all about Nicaragua and this stage of your project.
Don't come home for a few weeks cos we have no taps or loo in your bathroom, no running water and no shower/bath either in there. JL are coming out to measure up the flooring tomorrow and we're waiting on the plumber STILL!! everything else is almost in place as far as buying it all is concerned and I can't wait to get it all sorted.

Jean and Danny said to say hello when I met them and she's enthralled to hear what you're up to.

So it's "Over and Out" from a Big M who needs a cuppa and a very sleepy Tula with crossed paws while she's dreaming about chasing squirrels. Off to join the butterflies in the garden!
Love you so much H. Keep safe and well.
