X-Ray 1: Coast to Coasting

Setting out from Limon in the pouring rain, after dipping our toes in the carribbean sea, X-Ray 1 began their epic Coast to Coast adventure. Following train tracks we started to walk, meeting various locals along the way. Our first night was in a banana plantation where we stayed in a church and were awake up until 8pm! due to the congregation singing and enjoying their evening. We even enjoyed delicious homemade ice cream which was made by a local family.
2 beautiful Toucans, does that equal 4 cans?
Sunrise in stunning Barbilla National Park
The following day was tough as we walked 21km on already blistering feet but finally made it to where we stayed that night in relative luxury. We continued to walk on Day 3, passing waterapple trees and banana plants. Whilst stopping for a break, a local took pity on us and macheted down some seedy bananas for the team. The locals continued to show their hospitality with one man even inviting us into his house and giving us some guanabana fruit and fried plantane crisps. As you can tell food is incredibly important to us!
Morning yoga before a big day of trekking into the Barbilla Jungle
The view over the rolling hills from the community centre X-Ray 1 slept in
Henry with the neatest backpack ever seen on trek

With the daunting, yet exciting prospect of the next 3 days trekking through the jungle, seeing amazing wildlife and stunning views, we are more determined than ever to rise to the challenge set before them of completing trekking from the Caribbean Coast to the Pacific Coast.
X-Ray 1, 4 days down, 15 to go of their epic cross-continental journey

  1. Isabella Letty X-Ray 1 Coast to Coast. Well done Comms Officer Izzy (and Abi). Great to see your Coast to Coast blog in first, instead of last with Alpha 6! You look a bit daunted but hope you are not suffering too much from blisters and managing to have some laughs on route. By the way, was that your anonymous drawing of a shell we saw on a previous blog - looked like your style and, if so, great to see you can draw exotic items and not just English apples! Am putting a long letter in the post to you soon with all the home goss so in the meantime, have fun and keep doing the yoga! Hope it helps! Lots of love Mum, Dad, Ed, Will, Bess, Till and Tuft xxxxxx PS Thank you for your lovely long newsy letter - we loved hearing all about your adventures and can't wait to hear more.

Lieffie!! Is vast heel erg nodig daar. Lijkt me zo zwaar allemaal. HOE LEUUUUUKKKK IS DAT IK GA ZOMAAR EVEN NAAR VALTHO FACKING CHILL!! dus ik ga vanaf vanavond 2 weken skiën, looooove it! Volgend jaar ga jij ook 3/4 weken skien met mij hihiiiii like it!

    HELE DIKKE KUS baby!!

Debbie and I thought you looked a little pale in the pictures, and that perhaps it's time to throw caution to the wind and ditch the sunblock. What you're doing is truly awesome in the extreme. My wacky sister (rightfully) can't stop gushing about how proud she and James are of you. Apparently, however, Hugo has now taken over your room, and is also using the engine from your car in a school science project.
I hope this next phase goes well. AND stay safe!

Hope the blisters aren't too bad.
On the back of your exploits Adam, Jay-Z and the Phat Phantom (also known as Kirk) and I have signed up for a Tough Mudders half marathon (SAS assault course - designed to kill off 50+ year olds!). Team name is Beer Guts and Glory. You'll miss our tremendous efforts as your in Oz when it takes place.
Joe headed out to a party (Anoushka's??) - theme was James Bond. He looked much smarter going out than he ever manages to look in his school uniform!
Mum and me off to a dinner at the Natural History Museum tonight to 'launch' the building of Titanic 2. Raffle for first class tickets on inaugural voyage - fingers crossed we dont win!
Granny and Mum leave for the Modern Art tour on the Cote d'Azur tuesday.

    Hi Hen,
we have all just seen a very jokes photo of you on the blog with a caption underneath that youve got the neatest rucksack every seen on raleigh. no doubt a combination of your own skills and mum's retentiveness. Hope trek is proving ok? hard work? are you struggling with anything? how many people on your trek have terrible blisters or anything like that? how are you doing? got back or foot problems? they are the worst i always thought (not that i ever had any). have you had to camp yet or have you managed to stay in village centres every night? when we were trekking we never used our tents once and eventually we just sent them back to field base on the assumption that we would always be able to find somewhere to stay in! fortunately it paid off and meant that no one had to carry those ridiculous contraptions around with them. have you had a 'trit' yet? those delicious ice creams that i told you about? arent they jsut the absolute best?! like i told you, we used to run into villages to try to make sure we could get one! how is your group? made more lovely friends? or simply best friends with your ipod?! i hope youve got some good people to trek with, you really need them on trek i thought! i trekked with meryl, who sends her love and is very jealous blah blah blah. news from me is that ive hurt my knee and my foot i think from running. I have a problem with a tendon in my knee i think and i have got some form of tendon issue in my foot as well that means i can barely walk at the moment. it gets worse at night and i woke up to go to the loo the other night and had to hop because i couldnt put any weight on my foot. it is absolute agony at the moment. hoping that it will get better before i go skiing next week otherwise that is going to be nothing short of (insert foul word where appropriate) annoying! i have also signed up to do a half marathon in april so i need to get training for that as well. so these injuries have come at very very bad times indeed. but im trying to take painkillers and jsut get over it and keep going! thats what hopefully is the motto or certainly the mentality for all you guys out there. Oh and finally, i picked up my first exam paper for my finals yesterday! scary until i opened it. basically it is a take away paper where we are given a piece of piano music and told to re-write it for orchestra. its orchestration. i opened up my paper (which we are given 8 weeks to complete) and discovered that the moronic exam board have set us a question that was set about 4 years ago as the exam paper so ive already done it as a past paper and had it all checked etc! how hilarious is that?! im obviosuly not going to admit it, that would be far too honest and be very annoying as i would then just have to do some more work! but its great, i literally have jsut got to perfect something i did over the christmas holidays and that is 1/8th of my degree out of the way! only the faculty of music from oxford university could do something so simply dim! ill try to contact you again before i go away skiing for the week. but keep going, hope youre having fun and that you dont pick up diseases, blisters, bites, infections, or any other horrid tropical trekking ailment! have fun. j x

  13. Lieverd!!

    Hi Hen
(James thought it was hilarious that I typed Hen in one of my previous blogs but I guess everyone knows that now!!)
Am not sure I can compete with James' huge message (he clearly has a much more exciting life than me!!)nor his list of ailments but we too found the picture of your neat and tidy rucksack absolutely hilarious!! Sorry I've always been so boring (I was going to use another word there but thought my whole message might get thrown out by the Raleigh chiefs if I did!!!!!) about packing and it has clearly rubbed off on you!!
Hope trekking is fun and all that walking around the house in your new walking boots is paying off and you are basically walking on air!! Have you been the guy who is in charge of the day and route yet? I remember James that could be quite tense!!
Am off to London for a couple of days with Claire tomorrow. Harry by all accounts is enjoying Borneo. He rang apparently to "check the football results....." Mmh hmm......
Anyway London will make a nice change from dogs and horses - think we are going to see a show and no doubt there might be a couple of shops to head to too!!
Dad's birthday went well. Claire and Mark took us out to Well pub on Sat night and then we went to Ripon point to point with a picnic on Sunday with Simpsons, Menages (by default), Grangers and Glatmans. Dallas' were there too as they were organisers. I won £1.50 and lost about £20! Think Claire won £140!! Very annoying.
Have been trying to design a table for the conservatory and my new thing is spinning at the leisure centre - omg its so hard and particularly at 7.30 in the morning which is the class I went to last!!
I'll shut up now as if these blogs really do get read out to the whole group your gang are going to be pretty fed up of hearing the news form the Ashes!!

Keora Bro :) hows your massive trek going? Seen anything cool? It's my four day into masters and I have to pick my thesis topic soon, so looking forward to that ;) ;)Ashley won a price for possibly being the top student at the whole University. So that's pretty cool. Going to buy myself an awesome new phone tomorrow, looking forward to that. Me and Nelson had a marlin come up into the gear last week, but it grabbed the leader above the lure. It was so gay, we were so close to hooking it up. Me and David embarrassed Onalee by picking her up from school fully dressed in drag, photos are on facebook.

Apart from that not a lot has happened on this end. I'm sure you've been doing more exciting things. Oh, we did catch a Kahawai one day so I put on a life jacket and jumped in the ocean and played and landed in the ocean. We have some pretty cool helmet cam footage of that. Plus tonnes of underwater video of swimming with dolphins.
Well that's pretty much it. Catch you later bro.

    Daffodils
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
    A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
    They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
    In such a jocund company:
    I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
    Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
    And dances with the daffodils.

Really proud of what you've been doing trekking all that way. Feeling sorry for you all as it seems X-ray 1 and ? 3 most hit by the rain and mud. God it must be very tough. I am so looking forward to hearing you have reached that wonderful beach and warm sea everyone blogs about reaching!! I wonder what your community project will be.
