The magic sorting hat of Turrialba

Each PM, as nervous as any new wizard to Hogwarts, took the stage to don the sorting hat of project selection.  How will the hat pronounce?  Will it be environmental, community or a trek?  Who will be your team mate/s?  Only the magic hat can decide.

In a Harry Potter/Ready, Steady, Cook mixed metaphor the first task for the new teams was to create a pudding with store cupboard ingredients in 20 minutes - marks awarded for taste and presentation of the dish.

Alpha 2 succeeded on taste - with David (call me Heston) and Claudia presenting a tropical flapjack.  Alpha 1 took presentation to extravaganza levels by bringing bunny ears and gold sequins to the table.  Fieldbase scored for team effort with Phil being the actual table, Joss being the waiter and the girls providing the crunchy bottom, fruity layer, velvety chocolate and zesty topping of their Fieldbase Fantasy.

It all had to be decided with a dance off and Fieldbase pipped the competition at the post.  There may have been strength in numbers, and we have had an extra week to bond - but personally I put it down to sheer skill and creativity.

So, now fully bonded over cooking and dancing, the teams are assembled and ready to go.  The running order for the Project Groups is as follows:
Alpha 1 - Coast to Coast Trek, Costa Rica
Nicole, Dave and Natalie
This Trek has taken various forms over the past few years, but Expedition 12L will feature a particularly exciting version, starting at the Caribbean Sea and ending on the Pacific Coast.  Crossing a continent as well as a country.
Alpha 1
Nicole, Dave and Natalie - Alpha 1

Alpha 2  - Miratombo Trek, Nicaragua
David and Claudia
Starting in the far north of Nicaragua, near to the Honduran border, the Miratombo Trek meanders through the diverse landscapes of Esteli and Leon.
Alpha 2
David and Claudia - Alpha 2
Alpha 3 - Environmental, starting in Hermosa, Costa Rica
Jim, Clare and Tracy H

Working to preserve the turtle populations of Hermosa beach, this project will collect turtle eggs, ensure that they hatch safely and release the turtles back into the wild where they have the best chance of survival.  This team will spend the second half of their phase at Carara National Park (see below).
Alpha 3
Jim, Clare and Tracy - Alpha 3
Alpha 4 - Environmental, starting in Carara National Park, Costa Rica
Pauline, Jae and Sarah
Starting in the Carara National Park this group will work to clear the Lago Meandrica trail, previously inaccessible in the rainy season.  This work will enable many more visitors to the park, and therefore increase the revenue for the Park and allowing them to continue their other environmental work. This team will spend the second half of their phase at Hermosa (see above). Where they will be joined by Charlie.
Alpha 4
Jae, Sarah, Pauline and Charlie in the background - Alpha 4
Alpha 5 - Achuapa water project, Nicaragua
Sarah,  Florian and Vic
This project group will work with the local community of Los Loros in Achuapa to develop a gravity-feed water system to bring clean and safe drinking water to 40 families living there.

In the mere blink of an eye our Alpha groups have returned, eaten us out of house and home, regrouped, and flown the nest in the form of X-Ray groups. Phase Two is underway. Just two days ago, all was calm at Fieldbase. In a jam packed schedule we’ve welcomed and initiated our Explorers at ‘jungle’ camp, taken the Expedition 12B photo, seen our groups relay the story of phase one in their skits, reformed and ‘broken the ice’ with our new X-Ray groups, and last night celebrated the end of changeover with a super-heroes and villains fancy dress party. You’ll also be pleased to learn that our late arrivals have also made it to Fieldbase. Welcome Ben, George, Thomas, Nicole, Danielle and Jose!

Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

After a tough couple of days in the jungle you would perhaps believe that some well-earned R&R would be in line for the brave VMs of 12B. Not so. Another day, another trip – its project allocation time.
The ceremony, although lacking the special effects and drama of an ITV reality show, was no less exciting, as VMs discovered where they would spending Phase One of Expedition 12B. Sadly this is just the briefest of entries as we prepare to set off for various destinations around Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Nonetheless I’ve helpfully listed the projects and groups below as they undertake their Project Planning Visits for the next 5 days, so you are aware of your loved ones’ progress:

Project allocations

Cue drum rolls, whooping, cheering and general excitement….the PMs for phase one have been allocated their projects.

Heading off on the Turrisantos trek, our very own Little and Large, Will and Ken (pictured below with phase one fieldbase medic James). An amazing trek that takes in two active volcanoes – Irazu and Turrialba – and climbs to nearly 3,000 meters before finishing at the stunning Playa Matopalo on the Indian Ocean.

Tackling the challenging Guanacaste trek will be Randy and Lucy. The setting for this trek covers a huge variety of different ecosystems from cloud forest above 3,000 metres down to one of the last remaining stands of primary dry tropical forest left in the Americas. It also finishes at the Pacific Ocean at at Playa Junquillal.

A team of three PMs (Duncan, Matt and Rachel) will head up to the heights of Chirripo National Park, where their group will work near the peak of Cerro Chirripo  - at 3,820 metres Costa Rica’s highest mountain. The team will be working to repair the trails for the many thousands of visitors who who undertake to climb in this stunning national park.

Gemma and Owen will be heading to Playa Hermosa on the Pacific coast, where thousands of turtles come each year to lay their eggs. This unique project will also get to take part in nightly turtle patrols to collect the eggs of the turtles and put in them in a hatchery.

Heading to Achuapa in Nicaragua are Julie, Kunmi and Barney where their group will be working on a gravity-fed water project to bring clean and safe drinking water to 50 families in the community of El Carrizo. The group will be working with the local population to dam small streams, build tanks to collect the water from where it can run through pipes to all the local houses.

And, last but not least, heading to El Cebollal in Miraflor, Nicaragua are Bruce, Kelly and Vic. Their group will be building a community centre within the Miraflor reserve where there are a number of communities living through subsistence farming and gaining income from coffee growing, cattle farming and some small tourism initiatives.

So there you have it, project planning visits are next up and with some teams heading off tomorrow morning (Saturday), there’s some serious packing and planning going on.

Pura vida!

Already our Delta groups are off on their first adventure - Jungle Camp. They left fieldbase after lunch today to trek to various locations in and around the jungle ot far from fieldbase, where they will be putting their new found Raleigh survival skills into good practice; making basher beds, putting up tents, cooking on the trangia’s (small cooking pots that we use on phase… there is definitely a knack to using these!), getting friendly with their new team mates and getting their first taste of trek! So… walking boots on, bags packed, camelbacks full, maps at the ready, bandana’s on, trek song sorted - pretty much just about ready to go then!

Tomorrow afternoon the Delta’s will be returning and the Alpha groups will be off on their own Jungle and Trek Camp adventures. In the meantime, the Alpha’s will spend the night here at fieldbase and continue to settle in after two days of madness, with dinner and a little salsa dancing later on tonight!

As for our late arrivals (Luke, Kelly, Yasmin and Bert (Carla)) we’re happy to say that they all arrived safely at fieldbase this morning, were greeted with some traditional Raleigh breakfast cuisine (…porridge) and were able to join the rest of the venturers just in time for the project allocations.

Just a quick heads up for you keen bloggers at home - when you leave messages on the blog from now on please remember to put the name of who it is to, their Alpha or Delta group and who it’s from. For the 10 weekers these groups will change for every phase so remember to keep an eye out for when they do! Big thanks – happy blogging.

So all our venturers are here, the PM’s are geared up, all project kit is ready and waiting…not much left to do now except to ‘GET OUT THERE!’

Here’s to expedition 11G&H! Bring it on.

Pura Vida! (and Happy 4th July to our American viewers!)
