Echo 1: An amazing journey through the heart of Nicaragua
Will McNess looks back on Echo 1's epic journey on the Maribios Trek:
From starting out at the side of a road in the middle of nowhere, to ending up on a beautiful beach on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, our trek was without a doubt one of the most incredible experiences of my life. With the aid of a fantastic, diverse and energetic group and two of the most understanding PMs possible we turned what could have been a grueling ordeal into an amazing journey through the heart of Nicaragua.
It is difficult to pinpoint the highest and lowest moments as we went though about half a dozen of each on a daily basis, though never with the lows outweighing the highs. Some days it seemed as though the challenges thrown our way would cause us to crack - getting lost in dense jungle during our solo day (when the PMs left us to manage ourselves), being caught in the makings of a hurricane and trekking 25k in the blazing sun to name a few - but the strength of our group ensured these were all overcome with relative ease.
One of my fondest memories of the trek came after our arduous wander through the jungle. Upon reaching our destination at the summer home of a American rancher, I was fully expecting to hear a storm of anger and recrimination from the group but sitting in a hammock all that reached my ears was the sound of laughter and splashing (we had the added bonus of a pool).
Seeing the sunrise from the top of Volcan Cosiguina was one of the most breathtaking sights I have ever seen, amplified by the fact that our entire group had made it to the top, seeing the distance we had covered together brought home the mammoth task we had been set coupled with the massive achievement of completing it together.
Relaxing on the beach at the end I felt a mix of pride at having finished the trek and a sadness that it had come to an end, but sitting around the fire with the group I can happily look back and say I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
