More Alpha group updates

My goodness, all our Alpha groups have been busy bees over the past few days, every time we get a radio call, we’re amazed at how much they’re managing to cram into their days. Here is a round up of how everyone is doing and what they’ve been up to…

Alpha one have been speeding along and were feeling very proud of themselves yesterday afternoon after having reached the Rio Platanillal half a day ahead of schedule. Today they are headed to Veultas, which is at the top of a ridge with gorgeous views and will hopefully be staying at a lovely little campsite there that even has a swimming pool where they can relax after all their hard work.

Alpha two have had a couple of hard days and are a little damp from all the rain, yesterday in particular was a difficult day as they climbed over 1000m in one day. Lesser groups may be tired and grumpy after all of this, but not Alpha 2! They have been filling their evenings with games of Poker (probably betting crema biscuits and granola bars) and held a slumber party. Tonight they will reach La Esperanza, where Anna and I will meet them for their second food drop. The good news is that they are nearly at the top of the mountain range where they will cross from the Caribbean side of Costa Rica to the Pacific side, which will hopefully be much drier and will bring some well-deserved sunshine!

Alpha four held a tropical elegance party last night, which included a three-course dinner and party games – sounds like a lot of fun and I can’t wait to see some photos of that – we’ll try to pick some up on our road trip in about a week’s time! There’s been some excellent wildlife spotting in the La Cangreja jungle including a sloth, a snake and an armadillo. They have also been making brilliant progress on the path, as well as continuing to improve their camp, the latest addition is a library!

Alpha five are also going great guns with their work on clearing the path and will be starting on making some steps today. They have also been making improvements to their camp, the latest addition here is a swing - I sense the rivalry between Alphas four and five building a little, the boys in the two groups have even been leaving messages for each other via the radio – nothing wrong with a little healthy competition and I think by the end of this phase we are going to have two of the best camps ever seen on Raleigh!

Alpha seven have been having glorious weather up in Achuapa. They have moved to the nearby community of Los Playones 2 where they are working on a gravity feed water system and have already completed one set of trenches. They had a very well deserved day off yesterday, and are back to the hard work today. No reports yet of who won the baseball match, we’ll ask them on the radio when they call in this afternoon and let you know, although like Anna, my money’s on the opposition!

Alpha eight have now finished the third wall of the community centre and are moving ever closer to completing the building. In their spare time they’ve been taking the time to visit all the houses in the village and exploring the surrounding area, as well as helping out at the school.

And finally Alpha nine have nearly finished the floor of the dining hall and are planning on finishing that later on today. They had a game of football yesterday evening and Laura and Ross from the Fieldbase team arrived safely after their long trek in along the beach. There was some entertainment put on for them last night and I’m sure the group are keeping them busy today helping to finish the floor, and that Laura is also busy snapping away – we should have some amazing photos for you when they get back in several days time.

So all in all, a week into phase two (yes, a week in already, where does the time go?!) and everyone is doing really well, and by all accounts having an amazing time!

  3. James, seems like you and the rest of alpha 1 are really grtting in to the swing of things on phase 2! Hope you are having a great time and have managed to spot some wildlife...I really hope you got to see a puma! Just to let you know I am spending the week in "school" this week; and what an experience it's turning out to be! It's an eye opener thats for sure! I haven't managed to yet send the email about Georgia from the weekend as the internet is down at home but as soon as its reconnected I will send the pictures and maybe even the video if I can figure it out somehow! Really looking forward to speaking to you and catching up once you finish phase 2...got lots to tell you about the weekend! Keep having a great time, lots of love, Sarah x P.S. 4. Hey hey Kayleigh (Oochy Poochy Coochy Woochy!),

I have a lil confession...I may have Facebooked many of your gorgeous friends, and may have encouraged them to leave everso slightly embarrassing(but supportive) blog comments for your enjoyment.

I have noticed that VD, Skett, and Jessymoo have already done me proud...expect more from Char, Carly and even Vicky, who is still in Arizona doing her desert training. Wow, who would have thought that 'sea fringe' would have featured so heavily on the Raleigh Costa Rica '09 Blog eh? My work here is done!

I am beyond impressed with your group's floor laying abilities, are you going to christen the aforementioned floor with a lil party/dance...it would be rude not to I feel?

We are all looking forward to the new photos, and can't wait to see how the 'comedor' has progressed since phase 1...what a fabulously rewarding project to be involved with!

Keep up the good work, I am more tempted by the day to give up work and do something adventurous, rewarding and unforgettable...
may have to settle for doing it vicariously via the blog for now though eh?

    Love you...but obviously just a teeny bit x x x x

    Lieve Juuleke,

    We houden contact,
Popei veel sterkte en dikke kussen,
Heel veel liefs Pap en mam bas bommi en lara.

  14. Hi Kyran (alpha 1)

I have been trying all week to send a blog but can never get it to upload so fingers crossed this will work. By the sounds of the blog you are making great progress and are ahead of yourselves. It must be all the hard work you did the first week making you a bit fitter than you were. We loved the alpha 9 photos and couldn't believe how close to the sloth you were. Even Ross was impressed all you need to do now is spot some pumas!!! Nothing exciting happening here - just working as usual. I can't believe I missed your phone call last week BOO HOO I just hope I am here next time you get a chance to call. Dad said you were having a fantastic timem which is great. Love you and miss you (the house is quiet without you and less messy of course) mum and dad xxxxxxxx

By now you should have got to the Pacific, so hope you are catching some rays, drying out and relaxing. Great to see you in the pictures and your beautiful smile, looks like you're having quite a time of it. Now do you want to talk to me about the case of the unfortunate tee shirt?!! It reminds me of your Peter Rabbit pillow, I'm sure you remember!!Dad agrees you are looking well and very muddy; tell me those boots and rucksack were blue were'nt they when you set off?; looking quite brown now!Have sent a card, but will message you again soon. Were fine here. Spoke to Helen at the weekend, she and Robert have only a few more days left in China, leaving 13/3/09 after 3 days in Hong Kong, then flying to Singapore, for their next leg of their travels, it was lovely talking to her. She also rang Mamma and Grandad, they were really pleased. Mammaa said she sounded full of beans, but it was raining... you know mamma always likes a weather check!! 36. Hola Sean - Alpha 7. So, I still miss your music - oh, and you, of course, obviously; house much too quiet. Now, you're not to worry about this - because it's fine now, really, but Jim had to reorganise your CDs after I had a session with some of them. He told me off for not putting them back in their cases, not putting them back in your room, and definitely not putting them where I found them - wherever that was! I needed much musical distraction for the task of stripping the hall and that ghastly pink wallpaper. I've saved a piece as a memento. Seriously, your CDs are fine; really they are.
Wonder if your parcel has arrived? Anyway, dying to know about Nicaragua and the family you're staying with, hospitality, the lot, Seanie, and the labouring. Rib sticking muchos beans and rice fayre?
Forsyth wanted to know if you were turning in to some bronzed God or something. He tried posting a comment but it didn't get through, he said. Anyway, to things spanish here, have just returned from the dreaded progress evening with Pest, and the spanish teacher was pleased with him - felt faint! I'd been dreading it for 24 hours since your father announced he would be on the train then - how does he do it every time??!
Thinking of you heaps. Any ideas on itinery after Raleigh until LA? Awaiting reply from Kay and Tom there.
Keep safe, well, fit, happy, enthused, curious

  39. Kayleigh...Kayleigh (Alpha 9),

I just had to write to tell you about my traumatic day! Excuse my typing, but big, brown bear paws are not best suited to lil, black laptop keys.

Ste popped out this morning to join the Gym (yep, that's what I said...G...Y...M!!), and while he was out I decided to explore upstairs a little (maybe do a lil room raidage or try on some of your clothes?), and before I could say 'Labradors rule' I found my self locked in the upstairs bathroom! I suspect I may have been the innocent victim of an evil Kitty conspiracy;led by Biddy Bowlegs no doubt?

Kayleigh...Kayleigh, I was locked in there for 5 whole hours...scared and alone. So scared was I that I did what comes naturally when one is scared...in fact I did what comes naturally all over the bathroom floor, and then proceeded to stomp all over it in my attempts to escape!

Thankfully Ste eventually rescued me from my porcelain prison. 3 bottles of bleach, 2 mop heads, and a whole can of air freshener later, all physical reminders of my traumatic day have been erased...however the mental scars will stay with me forever!

I know you are probably reeling in shock at my lil tale, especially the most shocking revelation of all...Ste actually joined the GYM!

    Love you, miss you...Rolo x x x
