Alpha Romeo 2-clean but smelling of eggs!

Words: Sylvie Myers

Part One

Eight days ago; Mari, Chich, Stijn, Yuri, Mel, Roberto, Alexia, Harm, Cat, Hannah, Sophie, Chema, Byran and Sylvie (me) were assigned to the Guanacaste Trek and became Alpha Romeo 2.

The next day we were dropped off in a nice air conditioned bus into the baking hot heat and blazing sunshine of Rio Canamazo, along with 15 very heavy backpacks! That afternoon we dragged ourselves through dry woodlands and farms to the porch of a local church in Angeles where we spent our first night. Since then our route has taken us through Alto Cebadilla, Santa Elena, Arenal Viejo, Tronodora, Cerro Montecristo, El Jilguero and finally to El Pilon in Tenorio National Park.

We have walked along gravel roads, through hilltop farmlands with stunning views of the Gulf of Nicaragua, and along muddy roads studded with horse and cow hoof-prints through patches of tropic forest. One night we camped on a ridge overlooking Volcan Arenal and Lake Arenal, then dropped down to walk along the lakeside the following day.

We were nearly blown off Cerro Montecristo whilst walking amongst the wind turbines! The past two days have been along treacherously steep and muddy trails through jungle guided by the legendary Don Luz. Lichens grow on every surface, vines hang from above and ferns struggle for ground space with glossy broad-leaved shrubs. Today in Tenorio National Park we passed a beautiful waterfall and a river coloured turquoise by the geothermal activity.

We sleep in tents, churches, community centres or rangers stations. If we’re lucky there will be a tap or stream where we fill a bowl to wash in, or even cold showers sometimes, but we all still smell so bad!
We cook porridge for breakfast and pasta, rice, mash or lentils for dinner on trangias. Lunch is pureed refried beans from a pouch, cold tins of pork and beans (that don’t actually contain any pork) or tuna. So far the weather has been incredible (touch wood), with the only rain coming at night when we were safely inside a community centre. Almost half the trek finished. I’m sure there will be plenty more challenges and highlights ahead!
Until next time…

Part Two

Hello again from Alpha Romeo 2! Since I last wrote we have walked from Tenorio National Park to Bijagua, Zapote, Finca Armenia, San Isidro, Colonia Blanca and finally Rincon Lodge by Rincon de la Vieja. Unfortunately, we are very sad to have lost both Jakyha and Chich from the trek [don't worry everyone, they're both ok].

Today we walked to a beautiful waterfall with only daypacks, since Volcan Rincon de la Vieja couldn’t be climbed due to high winds. The last few days have mainly been along nice trails through woodlands humming with the sound of giant cicadas.  Yesterday we stopped for lunch at natural hot springs that left us all smelling strongly of sulphur, aka rotten eggs. Sitting in warm water was a treat despite the smell: most of us haven’t seen hot water for five weeks!

We also had a day on which Project Managers Mel and Roberto left us to our own devices. We woke on Sunday to find that they had slipped out during the night leaving us to find our own way. There was a bit of disbelief and indignation at first, especially as much of the map for the day was blank and just said ‘clouds,' but everything turned out fine and Hannah (who was day leader) got us to San Isidro without an incident.

We’re all getting used to waking at 3am in order to be on the road by 5am. But this morning we got a lie-in until 5am, which was great. Only five days left until we reach the beach! Over and Out.

Great! Finally news from your group. It looks great and quite an adventure.
I am curious how you survive lack of hot showering..We will hear that when you're back!

Enjoy the final days of the trek. Lots of kisses, Mama

    Hi Darling

Great to hear from your group at last. Sylvie said this was her second report, but I don't think the first one was posted, because this was the first news since you left base camp. Glad to hear you coped with leading the team in the absence of the leaders. Presume this was part of some kind of challenge?! Also, the photos don't enlarge very much on the website (unlike before), so can't really make you out which is a shame. Anyway, you are well and making good progress on your trek, which is the main thing.

I am writing this from Mauritius!! but then you knew that. Very exciting. Got up-graded to First Class on the flight - another first for me. Hotel is very luxurious - a million miles from the way you are living.
Had a pleasant afternoon snoozing on the beach, having flown overnight. Dad now in the gym - in anticipation of needing to work off tonight's dinner I suspect.

    Love and miss you.
    Hugs and kisses
    Mum

Hi Chris Reynolds Delta Romeo 6

Hoping to see something this week on the blog from your group, it's great though reading what everyone is doing. Went out for a meal last night for Janette's birthday - everone says hello - good to chat with Joanne and Ashley - haven't seen them since Christmas - not much news to report from home, other than I've driven up our road twice this week without coming across Diana & Toby!! also Magic has been spotted, (and heard) on the Lane this last week. He's hoping to be able to be back working again soon, once the weather has got a bit warmer. Not sure if your'e getting any footie results - Man U won yesterday and are now 5 points clear of Arsenal - Stockport lost again - I think they're doomed!! Man U are thru to the quarter finals of Champions League and the semis of the Fa Cup - against City!! Work is going well - we've got a sale on at the moment, but not sure how we're going to pitch it - 'buy one get one free' doesn't seem quite appropriate for headstones does it?!! Anyway, take care and hopefully we'll speak to you soon when you get back to fieldbase at the end of this phase. Lots of love Mum, Dad & Alan xxx

Loved the comments - glad to see you're enjoying yourself. Letter arrived Tuesday, snail mail indeed. My coaching course is going well, interesting mix of people including a coach from Durham U (sounds like you're coming up roses there). Mum is sad today with Alex going to Catterick but sailing with Helen should take her mind off it. Love you lots.

So, Man City came for a 0-0 draw and defended, hardly coming forward at all and clogged and clumped our players with the help of a blind eye from the referee. Torres and Kalou started with Drogba and Anelka n the bench. After 70 minutes of frustration, the substitution was made. Luiz won a free kick and headed in from it. Man City tried to go forward, opening gaps and Ramieres scored a wonderful solo effort. 2-0. Third place. Game in hand on ManU who won with a last minute goal. Arsenal dropped two points as did Tottenham. Not a bad weekend.

Rode in Richmond Park yesterday and had my turbo in the garden this morning. Beautiful weather.

    Love you xxxx

hey hey, only three days now, im so so excited missing you a lot right now, but over half way so feeling better then i did a month ago ha. My days off this week are Friday and sunday, which is good but not so good for us really, as i think its wednesday you can phone and it's busy at work, but all is good we can have a big chat when i finish work and sure ill still get a split. Well ill make sure i do im not missing out on a last call before your last project. Cant wait to hear about it, im sure you dont know what the project is yet but hoping you will when we speak. Im seriously so tired right now its half 10 and im in bed and my eyes are closing haha, I didn't even go out last night managed to keep myself in which is proving difficult when your away. But was a good idea, had breakfast today and the boss of the whole von essen group was in the purple carrot eating so quite tense and sure a few beers would have not helped that haha. Other then that not a lot is going on really dont think il be going out this week either coming to the end of the month, so funds are running dry, well not really but sure my euro's will not help me. Going strong you'll be pleased to know, so don't think you'll need to bring any euro's, not that you'll have much choice after your gap year. ill sort us out, we'll go nuts in corfu!!!!! I cannot wait for it havn't had time off since London, so desperately in need of a week off and more importantly spend some time with you. Ill write to you before you ring no doubt but if not role on my call. Hope your last two days run smoothly, love you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Simon, This must be your last week on the second project. I wonder if I'll hear from you next weekend when you get back to base camp. More sports updates - Chelsea have drawn Man utd in the quarter finals of the Champions League. The other two teams in the half are Inter and Schalke. Tottenham face Real Madrid and also have Barcelona(!) and Shakhtar Donetsk in their half. In the premier league Chelsea are now third, having beaten Man City 2-0 on Sunday. And finally, England won the Six Nations but lost badly to Ireland in their final game so no Grand Slam. Weather here improving slightly - you were very wise to go away at the beginning of Feb and miss these last two months in England. You all look so healthy in the photos on the blog. The effects of an outdoor, hardworking life, I would imagine. And the kids look so sweet in one of the phots with your group. How's your Spanish coming along? I spoke to Nick yesterday and he asked me to teach him Spanish when he gets back in June so I said that you would probably be able to help too. He was very impressed.
Looking forward to hearing from you, lots of love, Mum xx

The letter is in the works, I'm just filling the pages as best I can :) So yeah, I'm going to be in Lincolnshire for the next 18 month. Oh and your mum has a new TV but I'm yet to hear how its working out. Only 4 weeks tomorrow until you're back in my arms :) Loving the jungle camp too. Love you baby, take care xxxxxxxxxx Joe

I saw you got your name mentioned in the blog, nice. Got my photos developed from the trip (yes disposable cameras are still cool) and have spent the past 3 weeks constantly talking about my little stint in nicaragua, literally feels like a ridiculous time since the pick axing, tortillas and tonio. My friends are almost as annoyed as you lot were with my non-stop story telling. Some as simple as 'one time, me and hannah were pick axing and then we had to go all the way back up to the top of the hill to get water', I can't help but be pure entertainment!
I have also introduced them to that four letter word that I can't stop screaming and to 'buhhhhh'.

They have also mocked me for the scar on my head and lack of tan but fortunately I'm about to be in the Caribbean for two weeks so that should sort that problem out.
Missing your blue raleigh t-shirt and yellow raybans.

    Keep it scottish.
