Part one
The other Sunday morning we all boarded the bus, knowing that our trek would begin in just over two hours! Dreading the thought of attempting to lift our 21kg rucksacks and apprehension of what we had in store over the next 19 days.
Day one saw a short but tough walk to our first campsite as we started to acclimatise to the conditions and our rubbing hip belts. At our first campsite we were greeted by Don Gerado who kindly offered us coconuts as well as a place to pitch camp. We were beginning to experience the famous Costa Rica friendliness and warmth!
After the first of many uncomfortable nights sleep, we set off on our first full day trekking.... 11km up a steep rocky road that seemed to go on forever! We later arrived at the community centre with little hassle other than a close encounter with a snake! Thankfully it slithered away in a hurry. At the community centre Delta Romeo 1’s favourite pastime was conceived: aerobics c lasses, with huge lunges providing a large amount of entertainment and laughter.
For the last three days we have been marching through the jungle and we are starting to think that the phrase “what goes up, must come down” doesn’t apply to Costa Rican mountains. Torrential downpours on Tuesday afternoon made the clay track even more treacherous , and hardly 100 metres could pass without one member slipping and getting a complimentary mud bath!
Our guide in the jungle was Juan Louis, a local boy who knows the jungle paths better than I know the back of my hand. Throughout the trek we have been greeted by delightful views, and despite the gruelling walks, spirits are remaining mountain-top high!
Part two
Mission: Trek from Caribbean to Pacific coasts of Costa Rica
Days completed: 12
Kilometres marched: 143
Highest point reached: 2842m
Blisters obtained: 42
Packets of refried beans devoured: 70
Average backpack weight: 21 kg
Delta Romeo 1 have now been walking, scrambling and hobbling over mountains for 12 days, yet despite blisters and muscle strain we are on target and about to start our descent to the sunny beach for a day of relaxation.
We have navigated our way over jungle paths, tarmac highways and dirt-packed country lanes. After long, hard days of walking, nights have been spent in tents, community centres, a pulperia (grocery store) and even a church. Sugar cravings are regularly satisfied by raiding any Pulperia we pass, with mini-cans of condensed milk being a group favourite.
Monstrous mountains and bulging blisters have not been our only obstacles. Six days without showers attempting to cook gourmet meals out of pasta and tomato sauce in gale force winds have only increased team spirit and made us feel truly like we've 'got out there'!

ReplyDeleteHi Stevie,
Wow, uiteindelik bietjie nuus.
Onthou always be on the safe side.
baie liefde

ReplyDeleteJust seen your blistered feet photo Jay, looks like you have all suffered!!
Bet your walk to Somercotes was a doddle compared to the trekking you are doing over there.
Just finished work and its Friday thank goodness. Am babysitting for Siobhan tomoro morning (still no sign of your new cousin).
Matt and Cat have just found out Cat is pregnant so we have cancelled the boating holiday we were going on with them. Cat would be about 8 months by then and so not keen on going on a boat for a week!!
The weeks seem to be flying now- its great to see you on the photos and hope you can contact me again when you are back from the trek.
Love you and still missing you!! Mum xxxxx

ReplyDeleteHelloooooo Stephan,
It is amazing to see the "poor feet" photos as well as read about all the trekking you've done with your team and the places you've seen. Unbelievable distances on foot and mountain heights. Hope the blisters heal - it certainly sounds as though they are well-earned!
Saw your FB posting about arriving at a beach - how heavenly. I reckon that if you can handle no showers for so MANY days and cooking under THOSE conditions, you will be able to handle anything with confidence in your endurance.
All the best for your expedition to Nicaragua.
Much love and very best wishes,
Megan

ReplyDeleteHI. So great to hear you got to the end of the trail and hope you are having a good rest now. Wonder where you are going next?
I am in Dartmouth this weekend. Granny and Grandpa send their love. Sun is shining and so I will probably take them out for a drive this afternoon.
Will wait for emails for final decisions about travels and uni decisions. Will try to keep and eye on emails in case you get to an internet cafe before you set out again.XX Mum

ReplyDeleteHi Lou!
Here we are again - life's scary (you may have noticed!) - just got back from a 2mile excursion by car to Watton. Now that's a tough challenge! So how's this gentle stroll through pastoral woodland going - must be a breeze after all the stress of the last few weeks! But seriously, 200+ kms in tropical jungle, heat, volcanos & weird creatures - I don't think so - - Norfolk will seem a bit tame when you get home - - - which is SOON!!( I saw a toad today - now that's scary!!) Can't tell you how much we're enjoying following you're progress on the blog - saw the pic of you're new group just before you left for this gentle amble to a glamorous beach on the Pacific. Gill & Bernie, Brian & Angela came up to see us last week & were captivated by the record of your activities that Gran has put together - we felt so proud. Needless to say Mum's looking forward to having you home again - can you really face a roast dinner or would you prefer beans - - - ?! We hope to go down to Bushey for Gran's 70th weekend after next & Tim & Fi may come down too. We had to cancel our plan to meet up in Lancashire 'cos Gran's knee is playing up ( I blame the gin). Thanks SOOOOO much for your fascinating letter which arrived last Friday - you have no idea how much pleasure it gave us - - we are SOOOO proud of you my darling. Take care, be brave & KEEP SMILING!! See you SOOOOON!
Love you tons!
Pura vida!!
