As X-ray 2 departed from field base to embark on the epic coast to coast Costa Rican trek, it is fair to say that there were mixed emotions in the air. Alpha 2s horror stories were still ringing in our ears as we arrived at the Caribbean coast and began the first challenge-trying to get our rucksacks fitted, or even on for that matter!
Once everyone and their rucksacks wer sorted we got off to a flying start. Day 1 saw us nail 17k in considerable heat, arriving at our home for the night (a kind of garage) early. Day two saw us speed along even further, arriving at our destination by 10.30, giving us the afternoon to chill out, play some poker and get to know each other.
Day 3 saw Thea's 22nd birthday and a slightly tougher day, trekking 15k along the highway in scorching heat with waving at truck drivers being the only distraction from the monotony of single file trekking. Don't go feeling too sorry for us though as upon arrival at Cimerrones, we were able to have a dip in a beautiful river. As we sat in the river singing 'cumpleanos feliz' to Thea, this trekking lark suddenly started to seem a lot more fun.
As I sit writing this, we have just completed day 4, arriving at the rangers station in Barbilla national park at about 2.30 following a VERY tough day, climbing many hills that will eventually culminate in the equvalent height of Everest by the end of the trek. The day was made extra challenging as it was our first solo day- with Clint and Guido sneaking out in the early hours to leave us to make our own way to Barbilla. Step up April, team leader for the day and Sammy B (navigator) who together ensured another successful day for X-ray 2.
One thing that is really beginning to become apparent on this trek is just how well X-ray 2 are coping and working together as a team. Previous leaders Kyle and Sammy G have both done a fantastic job and with Sarita's Spanish translating, Moritz's comic genius, Thea's upbeat attitude and Hardeep, Tanne and Craig's words of encouragement, there is no doubt that we will get through this together, blisters and all.
However, the most important lesson of the trip has been learnt by Guido, who discovered that rice pudding perhaps goes better with cinnomen than curry powder!

Its good to see that the projects are going so well and some of the writing is really well done. How about some news from fieldbase as well?? Its ages since we saw anything of you all...... Message for Rachel= Matt is in Caracas for a couple of days leaving Bex at home going to work!! There's no justice.x

ReplyDeleteIt was geat to read your update on the trek. Sound like very hard work but I'm sure team work will get you all through this.
Hope your feet are not getting too many blisters!
Enjoy this phase of your fantastic experience, we are with you all of the way.
Blues drew 2 -2 against Liverpool, they equalised with a very dodgy penalty, typical!
I'm writing you another letter and hope it gets to you for next time you are back at base camp.
Keep right on
Mom and Dad xxxx

Hola Tanne,

ReplyDeleteHello my Boy-in-the-Jungle,
Thank you for the lovely email which made my day! It sounds as if they know how to keep you happy out there, what with BBQs and dancing.
Here, you are missed on the building site (by John) and in the kitchen (by me), but hey - no need to hurry home!
At Wynstones, we are looking forward to a school inspection next week and therefore we would all like to come and join you for a bit. Everyone enjoyed hearing your news about the turtles, and all your teachers and fans send admiration and greetings. Abrazos y besos, Mum
Hallo lieve Tanne,
