Adri, Mike and Joey talk us through the challenges of the Coast-to-Coast Trek
Before we even mention the scenery, the dizzy heights of the Continental Divide, the national parks or the magnificent beaches on this incredible journey, can we return to the fact that this trek crosses an entire continent? In nineteen days, equipped with only leg power, brave words and gritty determination. Here at Fieldbase we tip our coffee cups in their general direction. A noble effort indeed!
In fact, Mountain Leader Mike was chomping at the bit to get started, along with his PM team – Adri, a super-smiley Tica who oozes energy and positivity, and our very own emergency room medic, novice trekker and all-round entertainer Joey, who’s been hard at training since arriving in Costa Rica. This is a relatively new route for Raleigh but Alpha Three are more than ready for the challenge.
Kicking off with the calypso flavours of the Caribbean Coast close to Puerto Limon, the team head north on the beach before turning inland through the swampy Caribbean lowlands, crossing banana and pineapple plantations. About now, they’ll be crossing into Parque National Barbilla where they’ll trek through dense jungle, before starting to climb up into the clouds and onto the Cordillera de Talamanca, via Parque National Tapanti. In week two, after topping out to enjoy the views at around 3,000m, Alpha Three then descend through the (literally) breathtaking cloud forests of Los Santos, now known as Parque National Los Quetzales. Actually, the quetzal is only one of many type of bird in this biodiversity hotspot: trogon, hummingbird, great tinamou fill the branches of massive oak trees, while jaguar and tapir sculk beneath.
Skirting the edge of 3491m Cerro de la Muerte (Mountain of Death), Alpha Three are likely to experience an eerie mix of swirling mists interspersed with momentary magical vistas across the Central Divide as they begin the glorious descent back to the ocean during week three. By now, Alpha Three will have their eyes on the prize – the balmy waters of Palo Seco, a rainforest-backed tropical beach. Here, while iguanas loll on the finish line, the Coast-to-Coasters will celebrate with a well-deserved dip in the Pacific Ocean. Alpha Three, we salute you!
Get a sneak preview of what's in store below...
Tomorrow: we head to Parque National La Cangreja and Alpha Four's jungle camp

ReplyDeleteWow this looks incredible - if somewhat challenging - but YOU CAN DO IT!!!!! Try to avoid any of the jaguars tho! Snowy here and very cold. George visited newcastle yesterday and wants to be an agric there (bet that scares you!) He played his first game for wharfedale on sunday and did well. I'm still ploughing through the fest prog (yawn!), Dad excited about our new puppy (not!!!) which will arrive just before you come home. You can choose her name. Han and Laura send their love - as do all the coffee gals! Everyone in the village asks after you all the time and send their love too. Look forward to reading your next blog - hugs and kisses Ma and Pa xxxxxxx

ReplyDeleteHello Rachel,
Apparently my last post provided the administrator in London with a fair bit of amusement. I wasn't aware they were published here {silly}. Percy has recovered and has now dedicated most of his time to the Nihilist works of Albert Camus, I think it is just a phase, but at least he is diverting more of his time to Academia. I have been reading the blog most days and hear that you have a tropical beach with Iguanas and such to look forward to. If you see any goats in trees, please take pictures. I hope you are coping well, I've been telling anyone and everyone about your exploits as if they were my own and they are as impressed as I am proud {muchly}.
I hope you have dealt with any snakes or unwanted crawlies with your well rehearsed Judo chop and you are employing the Stanley steel that will keep you in good stead.
Miss you so very much. Be safe and stay strong.
Lots and lots of Love
Wilbur.

Heyyyy Izzy! Miss you lots, keep thinking oh ill just give izzy a text then i remember you are trecking away! Looks amazing! I'm so jealous! Things are very boring here, had exams and started lectures again. I cant believe your getting a puppy, you should think of a costa rica / nicaraguan themed name for it! Going to book a train home for the weekend of your birthday so i can give you a big birthday hug! (You will be all super fit and cultured then, not that your not already).

Hi Urmi - We finally figured out how to use the "BLOG" system (I think). Firstly we miss you very much the house is very quite without you. But we have been monitoring your progress through this website and we are so proud of you and everyone on this expedition.
The pictures of this beautiful country are breath taking and it makes us want to be there -(but not to do the trek - well I might like to have a try!). How are you? we show your picture eating 'chocalate' we think. Have your friendly 'BUG' treating you.
Everyone at the gym are thinking of you and missing you, especially Michelle. Every member of the family are pround of you and ring more or less every week just to find out how you are doing. Mum is missing you a lot.
Love - Mum and Dad

ReplyDeleteHi Nathan - hope it's all going well and you are not too sleep deprived! My friends and I used your 50% off voucher tonight at the Leathern Bottle - seems ages since we were all there saying goodbye to you and Alex. I missed you both yesterday as it was the first time I didn't have at least one of you home to make pancakes for! I haven't made any yet - maybe over the weekend.
LOST is umm...interesting as ever...and I haven't got round to 24 yet. Half Term for me so a quiet week, Alex is on the way to Pushkar and Luke is working hard at uni after a messy weekend with Rob and Rich. Alex's blogs are epic! Would post you a bit here but I'd better not take up all the space! Luke says reading them is almost as good as being there!
Anyway, all good here, take care, love mum xx
To Robert Holt, Alpha 3. Love the blog; able to enjoy the transcontinental slog at a safe distance. Is it harder than Venture? All well here; still too hot. Love Mum

Izzbob!!! Hello hope you're having a ball! Looks amazing I'm so jealous. Well I was just thinking about you and thought I'd drop you a line...nothing that interesting to report I'm afraid but wanted to make contact! I went back up to Yorkshire last weekend and guess what - we've got a new pup too!! Is it harder even than those early morning girl's rugby hill sprints??? I can't imagine so to be honest :) Hope you're taking lots of photos and what not. Anyway take care and go for it girlfriend!!! I'll write again soon love you lots xxxxxxxxxx

ReplyDeleteHi Izzy, just watched your big brother video and feeling very jealous. I think there could be a career in filming for you somewhere! Laura had a nice time on her 21st, afternoon tea at Betty's followed by cocktails at some bar in york (I wasnt invited to that bit, but Hannah went up from Bath for the night)
Hannah texted yesterday to say she had passed her exams and got a 2/1. You havent missed much in G'town, just a bit more snow, rain and fog but no gossip I can think of to tell you.
Have to get ready to go for coffee now.
Lots of love from Alison, Stewart, Jack and not forgetting your ginger friend Git Dog. XXXXX
