There have been a few requests from the elusive Zulus 1, 5 & 6 lately - apologies for the lack of blogs and photos. We will have new photos from Zulus 1 & 5 by tomorrow, but I'm afraid Zulu 6 had their one and only visit right at the start of the phase, so no new photos from them until they return at the end of the phase.
Zulu 1 are very near the end of their trek now. Despite blistering heat (the wet season has well and truly ended in north-west Nicaragua and they are now into summer) the group are right on schedule. They stopped just a little short of their destination yesterday and stayed in a place called Cervantes - they came across a natural swimming pool and decided to wash the layers of dust, dirt, sand and sweat from their weary bodies! Today they will walk to Cosiguina, knowing that they will soon reach the highlight of the trek, Volcan Cosiguina.
Zulu 5 had a massive party in their community two nights ago to celebrate the completion of the project in El Cacao....fifty family homes, plus school and community centres now have clean and fresh water thanks to the work done by Raleigh and the community. They partied in style with piñatas, a slaughtered pig and endless reggaeton blasting from the discomovil. The next day they moved to Matapalo, a three hour walk from El Cacao - here they will do a mini-water project before returning to Field Base. So far they have worked on digging trenches in the mornings and collected sesame seeds in the afternoon - all of the members of the cooperative grow this and are then guaranteed a fair price for it. Most of it ends up as oil sold in the high streets of The Body Shop in the UK!
Zulu 6 are continuing with their path and have also been building a toilet and shower block. See above for more photos.
