Our Echo groups are now more than halfway through their Phase 2 deployments and they're all making great progress with their treks, turtle patrols and construction work. Here's an update from around the project sites from Miraflor to La Cangreja:
Echo 1 (Maribios Trek): Continuing their trek through Nicaragua's volcanos. Today they walked 25km to Santa Barbara and were up super early to avoid the midday heat. Tomorrow they'll continue on to Buena Vista, getting closer to Volcan Cosiguina where they'll watch the sunrise on the final day of their epic journey.
Echo 2 (Guanacaste Trek): They had a short walk to Rincon Lodge today and are planning to climb the stunning Rincon de la Vieja tomorrow. They're keeping their fingers crossed for clear skies to enjoy the amazing views. So far on their journey, Echo 2 have visited several hot springs to relax and rest their feet.
Echo 3 (La Cangreja): Since setting up their jungle camp, Echo 3 have been working hard laying pipes for La Cangreja's water system, which is vital for the rangers to maintain a presence and continue monitoring the park.
Echo 4 (Playa Hermosa): There been lots of turtle activity at Echo Beach with our team collecting almost 1000 eggs from nine different nests last night alone. In addition to the nightly beach patrols, Echo 4 have been clearing the beach of litter and debris and planting distance markers to assist with monitoring of the turtles' nesting habits. Today they took a walk to explore the local area.
Echo 5 (El Coyolito): Have moved in with their host families and are enjoying traditional Nicaraguan life. They've finished leveling the building site for the community centre and started construction of the foundations today. They've just had a visit from Fieldbase with a welcome delivery of chocolate and post.
Echo 6 (La Naranja de Tayacan): Have made great progress to finish building the community centre which was started in Phase 1 and dig a two metre long drop hole. Today they walked to El Cebollal where they will paint a community centre built by a previous Raleigh expedition.
And Fieldbase staff have been out and about with Johnny, James and Abi currently touring our Nicaraguan project sites in Bravo 3, while Sarah, Lisa, Kala and your truly holding the fort in Turrialba.
Stay tuned for more updates soon.

Hi Ana
ReplyDeleteWas great to get your email as we hadn't heard from you for a while. We were eagerly waiting to hear how you and the environment group are helping the turtles.
The photes from the 10G sign offs looked great and the sea looked gorgeous. They made us jealous as we sit here in the dreary Irish weather.
Missing you
x mum and Dad

Hi Cat, I'm very impressed you have nearly completed your ridiculously long trek, hopefully in good spirit unlike me, where I would probably moan the whole way! I struggle with the website, I'm not going to lie so hope i am finding the most up to date stuff you are doing. Your building stuff on our first phase looked brill, and the kids playing with the cameras were so cute. Hope you are loving your time out there, the weather definitely sounds a whole lot nicer than home. My update is I am now bored at home with nothing to do! Keep having lots and lots of fun. Hi Ana
ReplyDeleteNiall and I are back from our few days in Spain after meeting up with Anne and Ghazi and the kids. We had a great time and Niall made new friends who took him swimming and generally looked after and entertained him which was great.
Niall had a great time and spent hours swimming in the sea. He got a new hat glasses and crocs and looks like a cool dude.
Back home to rain and wind.
Dad, Brian and Niall are off to Uncle Trevor's tonight as Suzanne and Alex and Hannah are home from England this week. I am working but hope to call in to say hi.
Granny and Uncle Barry are up in Portstewart.
Last weekend we went to Cushendall. Dad, Cormac, Louise and her boyfriend did the Lurig run. We met Gavin and his new wife to be the beautiful Zaty and the new addition to the family the dead cute baby April.
Thinking about you every day and can't wait to talk to you on Saturday.
