Zulu One: The Corcovado Trek

This mammoth 300km trek begins in the far south of Costa Rica on the edge of Parque National La Amistad, a UNESCO world heritage site with montane forest, cloud forest and paramo. Kicking off with lofty 1,000m peaks, jaw-dropping sunrises and waterfalls, the group pause briefly to sooth aching limbs in hot springs before crossing the agricultural plains of the Coto Brus valley, resting overnight in small communities.

Stepping up the challenge in week two, the trek seesaws up and down the coastal ridge Fila Costeña mountain range before dropping down to sea level and skirting the calm coastline of the Golfo Dulce to beautiful Peninsula de Osa.

By week three, the group has waved goodbye to sea views to head deep into the best preserved tropical primary rainforest in Central America – Parque Nacional Corcovado. Using special permissions, 10B will be stopping at ranger stations deep in the park to find out more about conservation and catch a glimpse of the menagerie of wildlife that roam within: tapir, giant anteater, tree-hugging sloths, jaguar, puma, harpy eagle, scarlet macaw and the odd crocodile. Emerging from the jungle, the final days trace the Pacific coastline along breathtaking beaches fringed by mangroves, with nights camping under the stars.

The Corcovado Trek is a rare chance to visit these remote environments as the trek only runs during the ‘dry’ months of January to April and is well off the tourist trail. It’s hot, humid and challenging, but that won’t slow the group down – the enterprising team will be honing their navigation and camp craft skills as well as work towards self sufficiency and developing their leadership skills en route.

Could this be the best trek of 10B? You'll have to wait and see...

Nitin - the trek sounds incredible - but hard! Enjoy - and hope you see some jaguars and cool snakes! Be careful though. Sounds like it will be a phenomenal experience. Nothing to report on my end. Im going skiing for the day this weekend, and other than that sitting at my desk like a gimp.

  3. Hi Nitin
Hope you are enjoying your trek and it is not too hard. It looks incredible. Saw a photograph of you on the beach - I think you need a haircut! All well in Spain although weather has been pretty dreadful. Drove down from Marbella on Sunday was a 6 hour drive but went off well. Went for a walk to cove this afternoon and the waves were so high and really missed you. Look after yourself. Love Ma

Sounds as if you're having a fantastic time and from pix of Xray 1 and Corcovado Trail, looks as if the next phase will be amazing too. I'd better get practicing cooking tortillas for when you get back! Dad and Olly send love and of course so do I. Will say well done to Nat. Take care and have a great time. (How's the bandana?)

  7. Hi Nitin, how is it going. Not too hard I hope. We are back in London now and looking forward to hearing some news from your group. The trek looks fantastic and I am sure you will have a wonderful experience. Spain was cold and we had torrential rain on Tuesday. Went to the cove and the waves were huge - missed you. London is cold but sunny. Toby's mum and Tacey's dad were asking how you were and sent their love. Naani sent her love too. Lots of love. Missing you so much. Love Mama. (P.S. think you need to have your haircut !)

Hey Pete, looks like you're having such an amazing time! Thanks for the e-mails, I'm so so jealous!
Uni is good but hard work as usual and can't really be arsed with it at the mo. Venice was wicked, had such a good time, it's so surreal and was so much fun with everyone off my course!
Other than that there's nothing very exciting to tell, except that I just booked flights to S.E Asia for summer with Nina and Becci for a month. Which means I won't be there when you get back!!! So excited though!
Hope the trek is going well and you're still enjoying yourself,
Lots of love Ell, miss you a bit xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi there! Hope you're enjoying your trek. Sounds amazing (if a little grueling). Every day we check the site waiting for news even though we know you're in the middle of nowhere... Are going on the presumption that no news is good news and hope you're having a great time and taking lots of pics.

Everyone here is getting ready for their spring break adventures - except me and Jake. :( Spring is still here although it sort of snowed yesterday morning. Didn't stay. Mel went up for a last ski though. OK, love you lots. Stay safe and have fun. From your evil stepmother.

(It´s a joke! haha!).
Muchos besos y un fuerte abrazo para ambos de vuestra amiga,
    Isabel.

UPDATE 2 from McBain: So we're just on the train back to London from Manchester. Successful trip-saw Fergie and the team again at the hotel on their way out; saw Ronan Keating in the hotel; my seat at OT was right next to the Fulham bench, literally; we won 3-0, which was a necessary and brilliant result!! Mams enjoyed her mother's day :)

Saw your moment in the spotlight with your jungle cribs - POSER!! Doing us proud tho ;) Expexted a bit more pouting from you macho pinky, but maybe next time :) Was a really cool video tho, and I thought you looked great and like you're having an amazing time, which is just so awesome! Looks like you're doug amazing things out there, so proud...and so jealous!!! :)

Lots happening on the job front too: Martha handed in her notice so they brought in someone permanent to do the web manager role. He's gd and a gd guy by the looks of things. Something will be made available for me to take a look at quite soon, I'm hoping soon anyway!! Thinking like maybe in a week or two I might find out if there's a decent permanent role there for me. Wld be handy! Watch this space ;)

Glen soon, all really looking forward to it I can tell you! Can't wait to have a little break from work. Everyone sends their love. As do I of course!! Hope you're having an absolutely awesome time and that nurse natty the translator is flourishing well!! Until next time Macho Pinky! Love you millions - McBain xxxxxx

UPDATE 3: Hey natty, mams told me you should be getting back to basecamp today. Hope everything went really well on the trek - can't wait to hear all about it!!

Just sorting out a few things in my room, trying to move things around. Waiting for my washing to finish so I can finish packingfor gleneagles! Ellie and I are heading up to Durham tomorrow after work to meet up with the rentals and then we all drive together to Gleneagles on the Saturday. Cannot wait!! May have to go out and explore the Durham nightlife like you and I did last year!! :)

Went to see Fulham play Juventus tonight with Ellie - it was amazing!!! Fulham beat Juventus 4-1, an absolutely astounding result from them. Brilliant. Valencia are through to the quarter finals as well as Fulham, exciting times!! Looking forward to trying to get tickets for their next European tie, whoever it's against. Apologies for bad spelling too, done all my updates on my phone!

Ellie and I went to Bruges a couple of weekends ago - Venice of the north the call it. It was stunning. Had a really lovely time there, short but lovely. We'd watched In Bruges the night before, which was absolutely genius! Have you seen it?! Hilarious!! Anyway, Bruges is well worth the visit!!

What else can I tell you? Going to see Peter Gabriel in concert on Sunday 28th. Good times. Work's going fine, some interesting developments potentially but only time will tell. So not too much is new on that front. Apart from that, just really looking forward to heading up to Scotland and taking time off from work. Will be nice to have a long-ish break. E and I are looking to sort out a trip to Abbers too as well as sort out some potential summer hols - Cullera might be on the cards for late September, but we'll see!!

Anyway, enough boring chat from me!! Hope you're having an absolutely incredible time and that you're dealing great with el español and can't wait to hear from you. Hopfully speak to you soon! Love you Mach Pinky!!! Gabby xxx
