On Saturday morning Bravo Three caught up with the Guanacaste trekkers, the hardy band who are hot-footing it across the scorching north of Costa Rica. Here they are at the end of Day Five of their 280km trek:
The trekkers began their journey at the foot of mighty Volcan Arenal, sensibly scampering away from the swirling mists and magma to skirt the shores of picturesque Lake Arenal as they trekked west. Rising from shore level up onto the blustery tops of the Cordillera de Guanacaste by day three, the team climbed past dozens of wind farms to reach Volcan Tenorio. And that's exactly where we caught up with them at a remote ranger station to drop off their food supplies for the next few days. The next morning despite the thick fog and biting wind James and Emma (Meryl) volunteered to share their thoughts on the journey so far... and the prospect of the next two days trekking through the Atlantic slope jungles of Volcan Tenorio national park.
But this was no time for idle chatter - seconds later Zulu Two waved us goodbye and disappeared into the mist, eager to discover what the jungle had in store. We jumped back in Bravo Three and raced ahead to deposit food sacks at two more ranger stations on their route...
Whatever gradients the Guanacaste group have in store over the next ten days, they will at least have full bellies - a feast of pork and beans, porridge, calorie-laden condensed milk, nuts, raisins, macaroni cheese and tomato-tuna-pasta waits for them in those bulging sacks. By now, the group will have completed their two-day jungle section and be spending tonight in the comfort of El Pilon ranger station - toasting marshmallows and swaping heroic stories with the rather curious scientists who use El Pilon as a research base. From these cosy log cabins, the terrain becomes rugged as they tackle another chunk of Costa Rica's volcanic north. Later this week, our other mobile unit - Bravo One - will be dropping in on the Guanacaste trekkers for a spot of volcano trekking as they attempt to summit lofty Rincon de la Vieja. Check back at the weekend for more from Zulu Two.

For Kate O'Hagan Zulu 2:
ReplyDeleteThis is the Shire calling to the intrepid Zulu warriors. Just read the latest blog, sounds truly amazing, shame about the weather. Hope this has now improved and you are enjoying sunny skies cos we certainly haven't got any here! As I write heavy snow in Scotland and rain here. We are all fine, Sian is busy decluttering her room, you won't recognise the place when you get home! Dennis misses you, he is permanently camped out on your bed. Flik doesn't seem to care. So hope yours and everybody else's body parts hold out. Go you zulu warriors go!!! Lots of love Mum & Sian xxx

ReplyDeleteHi Lucy
Thank you very very much for birthday card...that was a great surprise. Hmmmm,,,I have a back up plan!!!!

See you very very soon

hey james ash love the nancy sinatra hat! trekking sounds vg. happy easter-p'raps it is an easter bonnet?hen is busy working for gcses whilst mill is loving skiing despite having been unwell not due to excess shots i don't think...... lol dad
ReplyDeleteHi James (Ash), just seen yours and Meryl's ( I understand that is how she is now known!!) youtube clip which made us laugh! Even made Henry chortle out loud so must have been pretty amusing!! Sounds as though you are continuing to have a great time despite your bones being either worn or blown away. Hope there is something left of you when you finish!! Don't worry - we are eating your share of calories back home and hopefully the Easter bunny will arrive fully laden too!Sorry not to have been in contact for so long - its been "hurry hurry" since I came back from holiday. Hen is now back at home and we are rushing from tutor to tutor but he is being very diligent and working pretty consistently. With Camilla away there isn't much to disturb him (since Camilla is a huge disturbance as we know!!)Pretty dull for him but "we've all been through it!!". Milll had an awful journey to Alpe d'Huez (28 hrs in all) and then she was violently ill for the 2nd day. Think things are better now though it is snowing like mad which is annoying when you want a tan but on the other hand they desperately needed snow. When I came back it was like skiing in a slush puppy. Sorry to hear your tan has faded and to see you dressed up as though it was the middle of winter (amusingly in no clothes we recognise!) Granny Ash arrives for Easter on Thurs and thats about the height of our excitement! It was great to see you in action - hope it continues to be great. Will try and blog soon.LOL Mum xx

Marvellous and mighty Maya.
ReplyDeleteYour journey through the volcanoes sounds fantastique. I really wish you guys had a billion more pictures because at the moment we're rewarded 2 weeks of waiting with a pixelated image of the sunset. it feels like it's been so so so so long since i saw you last. im going to see clash o' de toitans noee which is a new movie and im just reminiscing of that time we went to see avatar on sunday (before school) and it started snowing. it was amazing. just imagine when you get back though - no chlorinated water, no more tuna, no more rice. only rivitas and goat's cheese for you!
Missin' me missing you.

ReplyDeleteHi Han, This is to let you know we are all thinking of you as you battle on coast to coast. We are with you all the way though here just now we are battling through wet and windy British weather - its called an "early Easter"!Keep smiling, darling Hannah! Hugs and loads of love from us all, XXXXXXXXXX
Hope Jack's message reached you eventually. It was so good to talk last week.

ReplyDeleteHi Tom
So good to get an update on Zulu 2 and to see your picture. Sounds like you are having an amazing and challenging time.
The weather here has turned cold, wet and windy, just in time for the Easter break so you aren't missing much!
Nasreen and Maya send their love as does Isobel. The family are following the blog to get news of you.
Take care and enjoy the next two weeks.
Much love, Mum and Dad x x

ReplyDeleteHe lieve Marijne,
En heb je al een glaasje water kunnen tappen via jullie zelf gemaakte systeem? Dat lijkt me echt kicken zeg!
Dag, dag,

ReplyDeleteHello Emma, Firstly get walking and stop complaining!!! I cant believe your coming home soon...it has come round so quickly. Life is still completely crazy for me and i have so many stories for you when you return! Han and I are still flat hunting and I am yet to book New York because its costing a small fortune and i figured we could go for two weeks in the sun for the same price. I am guessing you will still want to catch some rays this summer if all its done is rain in Costa Rica. Oh and the other reason why is because i smashed the front of my car (yes i drove into the back of someone. I am fine but Yogi is not so A.OK!!!!) Dad is driving Mum and I in sane at the moment. He is obsessed with this blog, I have no idea what he is going to do when you come home and there is no blog to check hourly. Anyway take care, stop moaning, get walking and have fun. All my love and huge hugs Kate xxxxx

And it is also raining over here too. BIG ROYAL HIGH LOVE XXXXXXXXXXXX P.S Your video is amazing!!!
Hi James, Henry here-just having a heated debate about whether stanford in g is performed at christmas and on mothers day always.

Opa was liefs. Dat zijn de grootse avonturen uit Amsterdam. Ik bedacht mij nog dat University College misschien ook iets voor jou is, ik stuur je informatie en we skypen erover.
Vele kussen en liefs, mam

ReplyDeleteHello Rach,
Not long now, im still missing u muchly, so very busy at the moment. Not had time to stop or even distract myself. I hope u are well doing and very nicely nicely. I wonder what food u have missed the most, probly Mama's home cooking, but i will make lovely turkish Lamb Soup like last time for you yes. failing that i might make u something nice that you like.
I'm sure you'll be thrilled to hear that Newcastle are one game away from promotion and Jose Enrique scored his first ever professional goal last night, it was very emotional for all involved.
I cant concentrate sometimes thinking about what u might be doing and hoping that you are having a nice time with Costa Rica. Much to do when you get back and loads to talk about, such as a new requirement for reasonable suspicion to stop and search. NICE.
I love you very much and I hope u are happy and well, can't wait to have you home and give u a monstrous squeeze.
Lots of Loves

All is well here, Ell coming home from uni tomorrow for a week and Grandpa coming for Easter, also Granny, Caroline and Daniel for some of the time. Has been horribly wet and windy here - not much sign of spring yet. Saw Rosa at the w/e and she said she could bring anything out for you so please let us know if there's anything you need. Anyhow we hope you get this msg. that we hope you're still in 7th about the trip and maybe thinking of staying on? Joking, be lovely to see you and catch up with ALL the news as we have not really heard too much. We're all fine, Mum's off work for a week, we've started on house refurb, booked our holiday for 2 weeks in May, Em and Harry came today for lunch, baby due beginning of June, Tristan and Nikki have sold and moving end of April, Beth due back end of April and then off to Greece. Hi Bry, (Zulu 8)
ReplyDeleteAllix and I sent you postcards from Queensland but sadly I don't think they'll arrive in time having just read "Snail Mail". I'm just leaving Sydney and will be home on 1st. Will write you a long email then. Can't wait to hear more news from you and send loads of love and a big hug

ReplyDeleteHi Nathan
Hope you're enjoying rice and beans and hard labour...and your Spanish is doing well :) Luke arrives back today, it will be weird not to have the house to myself any more... then Grandma will be arriving the week before you are back, followed by Lauren and you! I'll have to start buying food again! I'm still getting used to how little one person eats!
It's wet and windy again and has rained for days on and off...maybe this is what they call Spring showers? I'm not convinced. I got out there to do some gardening at the weekend (not that you'd know it to look at the garden) and got soaked, but still, at least it's a bit warmer (though having said that, it took me ages to get to sleep last night I was so cold!!)
I'm loving being on holiday, but haven't had a chance to relax yet as it's been all go trying to catch up with some of the stuff that hasn't been done while I've been at work! Nothing new there :)
I had someone out to measure up the bathroom yesterday and did some costings - why is it always more expensive than you think it will be?!
You may be shocked to know i just bought a wii...not out of its box yet, but maybe i'll get a chance later!
Luke and I are off to the Prince tonight to use one of your vouchers - i think he's had a pretty good couple of nights out on Alex's 2!
anyway, as you can see, life at home goes on much the same as ever...looking forward to seeing you in a couplf of weeks! :)

To Tara O'Leary:
ReplyDeleteHi Tara, have just caught up with James and Meryl's blog which was fun! How was the jungle? As always, the trek sounds really exciting - well, at least from the comfort of our home! Hope you are all surviving the blisters and sore shoulders - no doubt the porridge/ condensed milk/ ice-cream all helps ...... hey! your dietary tastes have really changed! We'll stock up on these things for your return - we already have lots of rice and beans so you won't have any worries about withdrawal symptoms!!! Here we are all well. Nacho and Anna are coming home this week-end for Luke and Emma's wedding and we'll be going back to London with them on Monday for a few days, as Mum will be on half-term holiday. Then Mum and I are off to Guadalajara the following week to see Ya-ya and Concha. Last night Argyle could only draw at home to Barnsley - so they're still in deep relegation, doesn't look good! On the squash front things are better - if we win our last 2 games we'll get promoted, and we play the first of those games tonight at UWE. Here, as I write this, it's cold and windy ... yes, you're right, it's coming up to a Bank Holiday!!
Keeeep trecking!
Lots of love. Look after yourselves and enjoy!

All send their love and look forward to catching up when you eventually get home. Weather here is cold wet and windy and snow in north so doesn't look like we will have a sunny Easter. ReplyDeleteHi Stafford, on the basis that you've probably got massive blisters on your gangletrons by now from all the hiking here is a list of motivational songs or key lyrics from those songs that I thought were relevant to your challenge and you could sing along to yourself along your hike or as a group – trust me you will LOVE IT. This is the only skill I have, bringing the music:
-‘Ain’t no mountain high, ain’t no valley low, ain’t no river wide enough’ - Marvin Gaye
-‘What have you done today to make you feel proud?’ - Heather Small (a personal fave)
-‘FAITH’ - George Michael (‘Cos you gotta have faith faith faith’)
-‘Don’t stop me now, I’m having such a good time, I’m having a ball’- Queen
-Chariots of fire theme song (Vangelis – you know the one: bum ba da da da daaa, bum da a ba da)
-‘Born to Run’ – Bruce Springsteen
-‘Survivor’ – Destiny’s Child
-‘We are the Champions’ – Queen
-‘The Final Countdown’ – Europe
-‘I will Survive’ – Gloria Gayner
-‘Beautiful Day’ – U2
-‘Eye of the Tiger’ - Survivor

Hi Nathan
ReplyDeleteHope you get these messages - can't believe you are home in a couple of week!
It's kind of weird having Luke home, but nice and normal as well - how about that for a contradiction?! I think I got really used to having the house to myself! i've had to do 2 ocado shops in less than a week because I forgot how much food gets eaten when it's not just me here ;-)
I made awesome hot cross buns yesterday, then again today as they all got eaten! Grandma sent some little lindor eggs down with Luke and those are already disappearing one by one...
Apparently the Newcastle match was good, we are now certain of promotion and will probably win the champoinship :) Hope they survive back up in the Premiership next season!
Spoke to Grandad today who is reasonably well, but just starting on another round of chemo so won't be with us for Easter...I think Tim and the family are going round there though.
April Fools yesterday - Rob told Luke that Teague had had a Poddington Pea tattooed on his back...we thought it was a brilliant April Fools, which Luke had fallen for - but lo and behold they were all out for Gaz's 21st last night and apparently he really has had it done!!!
Anyway, it's really late so I should get off ot bed now :) Happy Easter!!!

ReplyDeleteHi James--Millie has just talked me through this process on the phone, so here I am to say hope you're having a great time. Sounds, from what I hear, that you are! It's Easter Day and I've just been out to lunch with Jo and her daughter Mary w/James and their girls. Good fun. My news is that I am moving house some time in May: not far, just leaving the horrid 'village' (more like a housing estate) I've been living in since I came back from Spain and going to live in Taun ton. I'm v excited--can't wait! Meanwhile I'm going to Los Angeles on a workshop for 5 days and then staying with a friend on the edge of Las Vegas for a week. So I'll get some sunshine at last! It's been grotty here lately. Anyway just wanted to say hi, and now I'm going to watch your video! Lotsaluv Gran H xx

ReplyDeleteI’ve finally found your youtube video diary your parents were telling me about! Very funny, shows how much you haven’t actually changed. so please let me know when you eventually ‘find yourself’ and all that..! It sounds like your having an awesome time despite the trekking weather and blisters. Your parents said youre probably going travelling after Raleigh and it sounds as if you’ll be back just as I finish my last term! Everythings good here in sunny Yorkshire, best weather weve had so far this year.! Im on my 5 week easter break at the moment which has been really good fun – ive had to recover my debts from last term and also been on a weeks road trip around the south with 2 other northern guys, staying at 4 different uni friends houses..each of them apparently trying to teach us prosperity because they feel its non existant in the north..! Going to have to start some work soon which im sure youre not missing out there! Anyway, hope you have a great time on the rest of your travels and a big HI from the Reed family
