Welcome to the jungle, we got fun 'n' games

Today it was the turn of our Alpha teams to head into the wilderness for all the fun and games of Jungle Camp. The Delta teams all returned safe and sound from their night in the jungle and spent the day making final preparation for deployment to their project sites first thing tomorrow morning.

After hiking in with heavy packs loaded with food, radios, cooking equipment and other kit, the Venturers set up camp, get acquainted with all the bugs and insects and generally fend for themselves - with the help of their PMs, of course.

All of our Environmental project groups will be living in jungle camps for 19 days during each phase so this was great chance for all our Venturers to learn how to set up a camp with tarpaulins, hammocks, bashers (jungle beds which are hung between two trees or A-frames and covered by a tarpaulin) and a fair bit of string.

Both the Alpha and Delta groups had to contend with heavy rain and plenty of mud while at Jungle Camp so they quickly learned the value of a well-constructed shelter.

With a strong focus on "leave no trace" camping, the Venturers had to dig short drops and slop pits for their waste and also got a chance to cook their Raleigh Rations - pasta with tomato sauce - on Trangia camping stoves.
